{"id":431417,"date":"2011-05-27T19:34:13","date_gmt":"2011-05-27T19:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/05\/27\/nigerian-youth-to-guard-pipelines\/"},"modified":"2011-05-27T19:34:13","modified_gmt":"2011-05-27T19:34:13","slug":"nigerian-youth-to-guard-pipelines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/05\/27\/nigerian-youth-to-guard-pipelines\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigerian youth to guard pipelines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"53.2290132548\"><span><span>27 May 2011<\/span> <span>Last updated at<\/span> <span>15:34 ET<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Nigeria&#8217;s government has employed 12,000 young people to protect oil and gas pipelines in the Niger Delta.<\/p>\n<p>Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke said the youth would patrol some 5,000km (3,000 miles) of pipeline to stop it from being vandalised.<\/p>\n<p>She said it was part of the government amnesty programme offered to the region&#8217;s militias who were fighting for a greater share of oil revenues.<\/p>\n<p>Locals and criminal gangs often try to pierce the pipes to siphon off oil.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Alison-Madueke&#8217;s announcement comes after at least two people died this week in Sapele, Delta state, in an explosion at a pipeline damaged by villagers trying to steal the oil.<\/p>\n<p>Few residents of the Niger Delta, home to Nigeria&#8217;s oil industry, have benefited from the area&#8217;s oil wealth.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria is Africa&#8217;s largest oil producers, but attacks by militants on oil installations led to a sharp fall in output during the last decade.<\/p>\n<p>The thousands of fighters who laid down their weapons in a government amnesty in 2009 were promised training and jobs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>More:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/go\/rss\/int\/news\/-\/news\/world-africa-13581459\" title=\"Nigerian youth to guard pipelines\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nigerian youth to guard pipelines<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 27 May 2011 Last updated at 15:34 ET Nigeria&#8217;s government has employed 12,000 young people to protect oil and gas pipelines in the Niger Delta.
