LAGOS — Uneasy calm has continued to pervade the ancient town of Badagry days after the skirmish between the Police and soldiers from the 242 Recce Battalion, Ibereko Barracks, as shops and business centres remained closed for fear of the unknown.

This is just as tension is brewing over the whereabouts of four Policemen attached to the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, who allegedly shot a soldier last Sunday.

The usual gridlock associated with the road occasioned by several checkpoints mounted by the Police, Customs and various security agencies was visibly absent as traffic flowed freely. Only a handful of Customs officers were spotted at the Gbagi checkpoint. Even at that, motorists were briskly searched and allowed to go, contrary to what normally obtained at the checkpoint.

Police Command holds emergency meeting

Meanwhile, the Police command yesterday held a marathon security meeting with its officers. Sources said all the Divisional Police Officers and Area Commanders were present at the meeting.

Though the reason for the closed door meeting was not immediately ascertained, but a source said it might not be unconnected with the sad incident which claimed the lives of senior police officers in Badagry.

The source was quoted as saying that part of the reasons for the emergency meeting was to harmonise both oral and written evidence following the Inspector-General of Police’s directive to have the tragic incident thoroughly investigated with a view to finding those immediate and remote cause(s) of the clash.

Whereabouts of detained cops

Meanwhile, there is apprehension over the whereabouts and safety of four policemen attached to the RRS unit said to be responsible for the killing of the soldier last Sunday. The policemen were arrested on Sunday moments after the shooting of the soldier and taken to Ibereko barracks where they were detained.

But it is not clear whether they are among those killed in the barracks. It was gathered that the ‘Area E’ Commander, Mr. Olugbenga Adeyonju who met with Commandant of the barracks moments after the shooting incident on Sunday had requested the release of the four policemen but it was turned down on the grounds that their release might spark off violent protest by colleagues and friends of the slain soldier.

Meanwhile, a new Divisional Police Officer has assumed office at the Badagry division. He is Aliko Dakoli, a Chief Superintendent of Police.
