Addis Ababa \u2013 India has promised to support the aspiration of African countries to get a permanent seat\u00a0 in an expanded UN Security Council (UNSC).<\/p>\n

This was contained in a joint declaration issued on Wednesday in Addis Ababa after the second Africa \u2013 India Forum Summit.<\/p>\n

The declaration said Africa also noted India\u2019s position and its aspirations to become a permanent member with full rights in an expanded council.<\/p>\n

Both Africa and India have emphasised the need for Member States to exert utmost effort on the UNSC reform during the current session of the UN General Assembly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe underscore the imperative of urgent and comprehensive reform of the UN systems. We share the view that the UN should function in a transparent, efficient and effective manner and that the composition of its organs must reflect contemporary realities.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe expansion of the UNSC in permanent and non-permanent categories of membership, with increased participation of developing countries in both categories, is central to the process of reform and for enhancing the credibility of the UN,\u2019\u2019 the 32-point document said.<\/p>\n

It\u00a0 also stressed the importance of addressing the threat posed by illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons through full implementation of the UN Programme of Action on small arms and light weapons.<\/p>\n

The document expressed the need to further strengthen international cooperation to combat global terrorism and for compliance of member states with all international terrorism conventions and related protocols and the UNSC resolution on counter terrorism.<\/p>\n

According to the document, the Africa and India will work together to address the threat of piracy off the coast of Somalia and suffering caused by taking hostages, drug trafficking, and human trafficking.<\/p>\n

It also called on states to cooperate in combating and eradicating the menace.<\/p>\n

It added that the Summit had manifested the true South-South Cooperation and common endeavour by the two parties to find new ways of energising their partnership by taking into account the emerging capabilities in Africa and India.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe deeply appreciate the implementation of the initiatives that Africa and India took since the first India-Africa Forum Summit in April 2008, in New Delhi.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also laud further initiatives announced by the Prime Minister of India at the second Summit of the Forum in May 2011 in Addis Ababa,\u2019\u2019 it stated.<\/p>\n

The forum also welcomed the positive results of efforts to promote trade and investment, human resources development and infrastructure development in Africa.<\/p>\n

The document also enjoined the private sector and\u00a0 civil societies in Africa and India to widen the scope of their partnership beyond bilateral relations.<\/p>\n

It\u00a0 pledged to work together towards a peaceful and more egalitarian international order, where the voices of Africa and India could be heard.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfrica is determined to partner with India\u2019s economic resurgence as India is committed to be a close partner in Africa\u2019s renaissance.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe agree to add further substance to our Framework of Cooperation and to broaden exchanges to cover all facets of our relationship,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

The next summit of the Forum would\u00a0 hold in 2014 in India.<\/p>\n
