The Rural Poor Association of The Gambia (GAMRUPA), a registered community based organisation in Siffoe, Kombo South, last Friday concluded a five-day intensive capacity building forum for 15 community-based organisations’ leaders from Kombo South and Central on leadership management and principles.<\/p>\n

The training, which was funded by donors through the board of GAMRUPA and Libre Foundation both based in The Netherlands, was held at the library of Siffoe Senior Secondary School. At the training, participants were exposed to public speaking skills and how to apply leadership ethics and principles at their work place.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the Daily Observer shortly after the training, Kalifa Kanteh, a member of GAMRUPA, revealed that during the training, they were taught how to appreciate things and how to handle situations as leaders. “I learnt quite a lot of new leadership skills during the training and I wish to apply them adequately,” he said.<\/p>\n

According to him, many communities are today facing numerous development setback because of the different thinking of the people, alongside their lack of good leadership, judgment and innovativeness. He stated that it was only through commitment and taking up responsibilities that a robust and beneficial development can be achieved.<\/p>\n

While commending the donors for funding the training, Kanteh hopes that this will lead to a bigger collaboration with them. He expressed hope that they will soon organise training of trainers for the participants.<\/p>\n

For his part, Henrik Looij, the trainer from the Libre Foundation, said that the training has developed the skills of the participants in terms of self-confidence and public speaking. He said during the training, there was more engagement with participants that trained them to make new initiatives. Looij disclosed that this is the first time his organisation is working with GAMRUPA. “After evaluating the training, we would decide whether to continue our collaboration with them or not,” he stated.<\/p>\n

Foday S Darboe, head of the Tanji Health Center, who is among the participants, said the lessons he learnt from the training are important for both his office and staff. He assured to adequately disseminate the information he learnt from the training to his staff.<\/p>\n

Ousman Jabang from the Hope for Mother and Child in Kartong, and Maimuna Sarr, a teacher at the Tanji Early Childhood Development School, both said the training has exposed them to become good leaders and how to settle crises. “It has developed our way of thinking and also developed the working spirit in us. If we put what we have learnt into practice, it will be surprising to realise the changes it will bring,” they concluded.<\/p>\n
