Many organisations that introduce microfinance programmes to communities have had partial success while others are short-lived due to an intricate nature of operations.<\/p>\n

Many rural people have been discouraged from participating in charity related activities and projects because they are in most cases deemed as unproductive.<\/p>\n

However, contrary to popular belief some charity organisations indeed contribute towards the wellbeing of the rural people by empowering them to rise from subsistence to modern commercial farming.<\/p>\n

“We started as a small village group of 12 members through training on how to make business out of farming.”<\/p>\n

“As we struggled through, Voluntary Action for Development (VAD) intervened and introduced a microfinance programme that offers interest free loans,” says Betty Manyi a farmer from Kasanje Sub County in Wakiso District.<\/p>\n

She says her group (Gwalimutala Women’s Group) started with a Shs500,000 loan; “from which I got a of Shs50,000. I invested in a piped water project, from which I benefit by selling and domestic use.”<\/p>\n

Manyi who borrowed for four consecutive times says she has since got three projects of piggery, chicken and grows bitter tomatoes which she supplies every Wednesday at Kibuye Market.<\/p>\n

“I sell a piglet at Shs70,000, a cock costs Shs25,000, a chicken is sold at shs10,000 because they are of local breed. I sell a tin of bitter tomatoes at Shs2000 and I can earn up to Shs30,000 a week,” says Manyi who is one of the hundreds of beneficiaries of VAD projects in Wakiso and Mpigi districts.<\/p>\n

Sarah Kiviiri, a farmer of Bukasa says it is about self-determination and commitment for one to succeed.<\/p>\n

“Unless a farmer gets empowerment and skills, it can be very difficult to benefit financially because it involves planning and negotiating to achieve better yields both on farm and financially,” says Kiviiri, one of the founder members of VAD.<\/p>\n

But Manyi who joined VAD in 2007 says what appeared as a dream to her has since turned into reality.<\/p>\n

“Many organisations have come to our area promising us interest free loans but in vain. Others give us very stringent loan terms with interests rates that are very unrealistic, so we feared loans after many people had lost property in the guise of being helped,” recalls Manyi.<\/p>\n

The two women are some of the hundreds from 350 women groups who testified at the 20 year celebrations of VAD’s partnership with Friends of Uganda, a Germany charity organisation led by Ms Elizabeth Schummer.<\/p>\n

“In our cause, women are given a chance to try their talents and their intelligent capacity to invest in their own selected income generating projects like poultry, piggery, kiosks and market vending.<\/p>\n

“However, because these women lack enough the capital to invest in income generating projects, they are given this opportunity to improve their livelihoods,” says Benedict Male, the executive director of VAD.<\/p>\n

He says many women beneficiaries of the partnership have improved their intellectual capacity in handling their projects, record keeping as well as leadership abilities in management of their businesses.<\/p>\n

Male says that the funds given to them by their Germany partners have helped them to train women and support them economically with start-up funds to develop their businesses.<\/p>\n

He reveals that the organisation has received a grant of Shs450 million for the organisation’s new programme of family economic empowerment to enhance their work among women in Wakiso and Mpigi as well as supporting schools infrastructure development.<\/p>\n
