Sky Sports after the final whistle, and the Blackpool captain refused to dwell on his club’s decision to invoke a 12-month extension to his contract.

“I just want to keep playing and obviously the Premier League was the top of the tree and obviously I want to play there but for me the focus now is Sunday,” said Adam.

“I need to keep performing well, then once Sunday’s out of the way, get a holiday and take things after that, but the important thing for me was that the performance tonight was terrific and hopefully we can move on to Sunday, then the friendly in August.”

The midfielder than went on to express his pride at playing for his country, saying: “It’s terrific to play for my country, every time I walk out onto the pitch, it’s a proud moment, but in the first half an hour it was difficult to go out, having played on Sunday.”

“But some of the lads have not played for a couple of weeks, but when we got into our stride I thought we created enough chances to be ahead in the first half, but a mistake and we’re one nil down, but we never panicked and we kept going and I felt the sum of times, the football we played was terrific and we maybe could have added to it, we’re a good side and hopefully we can progress.”

Naismith spoke about the slow start by Scotland, saying: “I was hard work at the start, but I think with the season ending and us all having a few days off, that was the cause of that, but once we got into our stride we played some good football and scored some really good goals.”

On his own performance, the Rangers winger said he was happy with most of his play: “Except from not scoring, I should have had a few opportunities and I’ve missed them all.”

On the final day showdown with the Irish, Naismith claimed: “Ireland got a good win last night, but we’ll not be too worried about that, we’ll just concentrate on what we do, throughout this campaign under the new manager we’ve played some good stuff and it’s about progressing and we’re doing that in every game.”

Midfielder Barry Robson also spoke about the first goals for Scotland, by James Morrison and Christophe Berra to BBC Radio Scotland, saying: “I thought James Morrison had a great goal and Christophe Berra’s goal was a great header, but I think the all round play from the team was good.”

And on his own chances of getting back into the side, the Middlesbrough midfielder said: “I’ve been injured for a while and it’s been a bad second half to the season injury wise for me, so I’m still trying to get to full fitness, but I’m just glad to be back helping the boys out and hopefully after I have a good pre-season in me, I’ll be ready for the qualifiers.”
