AWKA \u2013 A POLICE corporal, Hannah Markson, has sued the Inspector General of Police, IG, the Force Secretary and Enugu State Commissioner of Police for allegedly detaining her and her brother illegally, praying the court to order for their immediate release.<\/p>\n

Hannah is being detained in Abuja, while her brother is in detention in Enugu, just as four other members of the family are being detained at Eket, Akwa Ibom State.<\/p>\n

In a 19-point affidavit, deposed to on behalf of the applicants by one Samuel Oge of Ugwunabankpa road, Onitsha, Anambra State, the plaintiffs also urged the court to order for the release of their properties allegedly confiscated by the Police.<\/p>\n

The arrest<\/p>\n

According to the affidavit, Police officers had gone to the officers\u2019 quarters in Enugu to arrest a Superintendent of Police, Mr. Victor Afamefuna, and when they could not find him, they arrested Hannah who was residing with him.<\/p>\n

When they got to the Police station, Hannah\u2019s younger brother, who accompanied her, was also arrested and the Toyota Rav 4 car he drove to the station was confiscated.<\/p>\n

The affidavit said further that the mother of the plaintiffs, Mrs. Ekaette, who came from Eket, Akwa Ibom State, to secure the release of Hannah and her brother was also detained, adding that one Okeke Njoku, an ASP, also led 10 other Policemen to Eket, where four members of the family were again arrested and detained.<\/p>\n

Counsel to the applicant, Mr. E. F. Okwuabanego, prayed the court to order the release of the detainees, arguing that the Police would not lose anything if the application was granted.<\/p>\n

He said the police was free to charge the applicants to court whenever they were prepared to do so, adding that the balance of justice and convenience was in granting the application and ordering the release of the plaintiffs.<\/p>\n

Though the Presiding judge, Justice\u00a0\u00a0 B. B. Aliyu, ordered the release of the applicants on bail, pending when they would be arraigned in court, they are yet to be released.<\/p>\n

He fixed further hearing to May 31.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
