{"id":430059,"date":"2011-05-25T14:57:59","date_gmt":"2011-05-25T14:57:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/05\/25\/obama-hails-strong-us-uk-alliance\/"},"modified":"2011-05-25T14:57:59","modified_gmt":"2011-05-25T14:57:59","slug":"obama-hails-strong-us-uk-alliance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/05\/25\/obama-hails-strong-us-uk-alliance\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama hails strong US-UK alliance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"95.3312799452\"><span><span>25 May 2011<\/span> <span>Last updated at<\/span> <span>10:57 ET<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<div>\n<div readability=\"7\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"holding\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/52960000\/jpg\/_52960171_jex_1056544_de29-1.jpg\" alt=\"David Cameron and Barack Obama\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Please turn on JavaScript.<\/strong> Media requires JavaScript to play.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>President Obama and David Cameron serve up at the barbecue<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>President Obama has told MPs and peers in Parliament that the UK and US have &#8220;one of the oldest and strongest alliances the world has ever known&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Obama got a standing ovation as he became the first US President to address both Houses of Parliament in Westminster Hall.<\/p>\n<p>He said the alliance was special due to &#8220;the values and beliefs that have united our people through the ages&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>His speech is expected to cover foreign and economic challenges.<\/p>\n<p>As he began, Mr Obama acknowledged that the relationship between the UK and US was forever being &#8220;overanalysed&#8221; but added: &#8220;There are few nations that stand firmer, speak louder and fight harder to defend democratic values around the world than the United States and the United Kingdom.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Questions about the international community&#8217;s strategy in Libya featured heavily during an earlier press conference on the second day of President Obama&#8217;s state visit to the UK.<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8216;All options&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>UK Prime Minister David Cameron said there was no future for the country &#8211; which has seen two months of intense fighting between pro and anti-government forces &#8211; with Col Gaddafi in power, and he should step down.<\/p>\n<div readability=\"26.075\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-13533306#story_continues_2\">Continue reading the main story<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>\u201c<span>Start Quote<\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote readability=\"6\">\n<p>Gaddafi and his regime need to understand there will be no let-up in the pressure we are applying\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>End Quote<\/span> <span>President Barack Obama<\/span><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;The President and I agree we should be turning up the heat in Libya,&#8221; he said, adding that &#8220;all options&#8221; for intensifying the pressure on the regime were being considered.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Obama said the international community had made &#8220;enormous progress&#8221; in Libya, saving civilian lives under the terms of its UN mandate, and the US was &#8220;strongly committed to seeing the job through&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Gaddafi and his regime need to understand there will be no let-up in the pressure we are applying,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>But he warned against setting any timetable for action and cautioned against the prospect of any decisive change in the military situation on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I believe that we have built enough momentum that, as long as we sustain the course we are on, he (Gaddafi) will step down.
