Babatunde Fashola on Taxation and Revenue, who gave the warning, described such acts as \u201cnot only illegal and unlawful, but barbaric and crude\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ipaye issued the warning at an enlightenment seminar organised for key actors in the state\u2019s informal sector at Alausa, Ikeja.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe activities of touts and fraudulent tax officers was the reason some residents accused the state government of multiple taxation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is illegal and unconstitutional for any official, agent or other person to mount road blocks, permit blockage or closure of any street or road,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ipaye said it was wrong to pay tax officers in cash, explaining that tax payers were expected to pay levies and revenues at\u00a0 designated banks.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, anybody that acts outside that will be contravening the standard practice set out by the state government.<\/p>\n<p>He said in most cases, the touts acted on there own as they were not sent by any government official.<\/p>\n<p>Ipaye advised Lagosians to resist the use of any crude method to collect levies and taxes from them.<\/p>\n<p>He urged the stakeholders to report cases of illegal tax collection to the Lagos Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we fight corruption by doing things right, we will definitely get the benefit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is illegal to mount roadblocks as a measure to collect levies, rates, taxes and penalties,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that the state government was bound by the law governing tax administration enacted by the National Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the law that all the states of the federation has adopted and domesticated,\u2019\u2019 he said.
