Winstead<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Though advertised as a prequel to John Carpenter&#8217;s 1982 sci-fi horror film, this is to all intents and purposes a remake. The story is almost identical, though the addition of a heroine owes a very obvious debt to Alien.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays an American palaeontologist who joins some Norwegians in Antarctica when they find an extremely nasty alien.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What follows is a thoroughly uninspired, by-the-numbers horror film about an alien eating under-characterised humans, hiding within their bodies (heaven knows\u00a0 why it bothers) and bursting out of them in various unpleasant ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Grosser and less darkly humorous than the Carpenter film or Christian Nyby&#8217;s 1951 original, it&#8217;s directed like a shoot-&#8217;em-up video game by Matthijs van Heijningen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Gory though it is, I couldn&#8217;t help noticing a lack of urgency. Characters stroll about when they need to be running, and chat when they should be panicking.
