WARRI-OVER fifty former youth corps members, deployed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State during the just concluded April 2011 polls, yesterday, staged a peaceful protest to the office of the commission over non-payment of their stipends.<\/p>\n

The protesters also alleged that of the less than 30% so far paid last week Tuesday, the Commission illegally deducted the sum of N2, 200 from the agreed amount\u00a0 for what the Electoral Officer described as bank draft charges.<\/p>\n

They said that they did not have anything to with banking transaction because those paid were paid in cash and that it was purely based on favoritism.<\/p>\n

The placard-carrying protesters, bearing various inscriptions, could not\u00a0 meet the Electoral Officer, who was said to be away at Asaba for a crucial meeting and then carried their protest to the \u201cA\u201d Division police headquarters, where they narrated their ordeal to the Divisional Police Officer, Mr\u00a0 Okon Effiong, to include the fact that Warri South INEC was the only INEC body still indebted to former corps members in the state.<\/p>\n

Spokespersons for the group, Mr. Glory Ubong and Steven Adekpoju, told Vanguard that the state Resident Electoral Commissioner had told them that money had been given for the payment of all adhoc staff, who\u00a0 took part in the 2011 general elections, wondering why the Electoral Officer was withholding their money.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
