ABUJA \u2013 The Canadian government yesterday in Abuja donated about $21 million to boost primary health care in Nigeria in support of the global strategy to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, MDGs.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the occasion,\u00a0 Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria Chris Cooter, said the fund was part of Canada\u2019s contribution to the G-8 pledge to assist developing countries in meeting the MDGs.<\/p>\n

He stated that \u201cCanada is committed to assisting Nigeria in areas of primary health care, especially for the rural areas. We expect that this commitment need to be accountable so that the MDGs, maternal and child mortality can be attained.\u201d<\/p>\n

UNICEF Country Director, Suomi Sakai, stressed that the fund was coming at the right time, considering the fact that a new mandate for the government was about to begin, adding that \u201cwe must use the funds in a way that will lead to better health and reduction of maternal and child mortality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Executive Secretary of National Primary Health Care Development Agency, NPHCDA, Dr. Muhammed Pate, in his remarks, assured the Canadian envoy that effort would be made to ensure judicious use of the fund.
