Dr. Ekwow Spio Garbrah, a former Communications Minister in the erstwhile Rawlings regime, and who has picked up nomination forms to contest President Mills in the NDC flagbearship race, has dismissed suggestions that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) can perform well without the founder.<\/p>\n
‘When you have a piece of land and contract the services of architects, engineers, quantity surveyors and masons, and they finish the building, they cannot say it belongs to them, because they built it,’ he said.<\/p>\n
Spio Garbrah, however, regretted that this was exactly what was happening in the ruling NDC, because people think that former President Rawlings is not the founder of the party, because he did not sign as a part of the founding fathers.<\/p>\n
Speaking on Peace FM yesterday, the 2006 defeated NDC flagbearer aspirant, stated that whether some members of the party like it or not, former President Rawlings was the king of the party, and that was why he sent his nomination forms to him, after picking it.<\/p>\n
He warned the hawks in the party not to lose sight of the fact that every prominent person in the NDC has his or her own supporters.\u00a0 ‘Vice President Mahama has his supporters, Betty Mould and Alban Bagbin also have their supporters,’ he added.<\/p>\n
According to the flagbearer aspirant, over 3,000 members of the NDC had declared themselves as footsoldiers, so the problem the NDC has on hand, was not just the flagbearership race, but solving other equally important tasks.<\/p>\n
Asked if the President’s performance was that bad, he noted that the race was not a matter of being bad or not, but rather about a good and transformational leadership for the party. ‘If the President is the best, as the UN secretary General is saying, it would be up to the delegates to decide,’ he noted.<\/p>\n
Speaking to the issue of serving on the board of Anglogold Ashanti, he said it does not mean that he would sleep on an empty stomach if he was not on any board.\u00a0 ‘It is not the case that I am hungry because I don’t have a job,’ Spio Garbrah said.<\/p>\n
The former diplomat mentioned that the President should be allowed to work and operate freely, and be the President that he wants to be, so that people would stop usurping his powers and tying his hands behind him.<\/p>\n
Touching on the upcoming congress, he said the early congress had a lot of risks and dangers for the party, especially at a time when the party was divided, but said, ‘If unity is possible, then it should be done now.’<\/p>\n
Dr. Spio Garbrah called on all aspiring presidential candidates to take note that every mandate given to them is only for four years, ‘so you don’t wait for the fourth year before you argue that you need another term to finish up.’<\/p>\n
It would be recalled that Dr. Spio-Garbrah picked up his nominations forms by proxy on the final day set aside by the party, which was Tuesday May 10, 2011.<\/p>\n
Before picking up the forms, Dr. Spio-Garbrah posted a video message on his face book page, in which he said some of his supporters had asked him to pick up nomination forms to contest in the party’s presidential primary.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
