A group calling itself the Concerned Youth Forum of the NDC, Nsawam branch, has declared its support for President JEA Mills in the party’s July 8 flag-bearership contest.<\/p>\n
The group said the president had done too well to be replaced as the NDC’s presidential candidate.<\/p>\n
The declaration was made at a press conference Monday.<\/p>\n

The Concerned Youth Forum of the National Democratic Congress \u2013 Nsawam, will like to take a winning position as far as the internal wrangling within the NDC party is concerned. In reaching this decision we’ve considered the task ahead and the need to present a marketable candidate to win the 2012 general elections hands-down.<\/p>\nLadies and gentlemen of the press, we will like to state a point about the pervasive noise being made by the so-called Friends of Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings \u2013FONKAR, as far as the July 8th congress is concerned. Ladies and gentlemen of the press, it may interest you to note that the youth forum in Nsawan is throwing its full weight\/support behind the current President, His Excellency John Evans Atta Mills.<\/p>\n
Why are we supporting the candidature of President Mills? Ladies and gentlemen of the press, President John Mills, within two years of being in office has done a lot for the nation which is obvious for the good people of Ghana to see.<\/p>\n
Some of the achievements include massive infrastructural development, such as roads and hospitals carried out across the country. These come amidst serious social intervention programs like the popular free school uniforms programme, the free exercise books programme, expansion of school feeding programme, the expansion of National Health Insurance Scheme, among others. Instructively, His Excellency, President Mills has securitized the debt of Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) which has borne a heavy toll on the nation for far too long. President Mills has also successfully addressed the issues of schools under trees.<\/p>\n
Even in this particular region, many roads in remote farming areas have been constructed, making it very easy for farmers to transport their produce to neighboring markets. Also farmers are currently happy about the subsidies that the government has given to farmers on fertilizers as well as agro chemicals which have not witness any price increase for some time now.<\/p>\n
With all these achievements, we deem it definitely unwise to change such a winning team.<\/p>\n
President Mills with his winning team, at the end of April 2011, improved on Ghana’s Gross International Reserves to US$4.9 billion, representing 3.8 months of import cover, mainly as a result of portfolio inflows associated with the issue of the 3-year bond. The reserves figure excludes an amount of US$112.0 million which accrued from the sale of the first lifting of crude oil, currently lodged in an interest-bearing escrow account belonging to the Bank of Ghana, awaiting the conclusion of the ongoing discussions on its distribution.<\/p>\n
Another area of which President Mills has exercised political maturity is his ability to form cohesion in the party by bringing all those who fell apart from the party into his administration to help build a better Ghana.<\/p>\n
We are also calling on the delegates to cast their minds back: when the ex – president and the founder of the NDC His Excellency Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings sought for the second term in office, although there were credible contestants available at that time, the party respectfully decided to allow the ex president J.J Rawlings to go unopposed and with all our support at that time made the NDC win a second term in the 1996 general elections. So if this has been the status quo of the party, why discerning delegates should be coerced or persuaded to change the status quo.<\/p>\n
Despite the fact that, this may deepen the internal democracy within the party, as being widely speculated, we think it is still infantile for now for anyone to contest the sitting president.<\/p>\n
We respect our only mother, Nana Konadu Agyeman for the pivotal role she has played in building the NDC party since its formation. But we are of the view that her timing to contest the ASOMDWE HENE is premature and will like to call on her to humbly rescind her decision and rather throw her support behind President Mills for victory in the 2012 general elections.<\/p>\n
