Kano –\u00a0 Kano State Zoological Garden is threatened by gross under funding, an official said.<\/p>\n

Malam Aliyu Lawan, the\u00a0 Director of Zoological Services in the State Zoological Garden and Wild Life Management Agency,\u00a0 said in Kano on Tuesday that\u00a0 the major constraint of the organisation\u00a0 was poor funding.<\/p>\n

Lawan said the little revenue generated from gate fees and subvention from the state government was\u00a0 inadequate to run the zoo.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to have some modern facilities, such as modern enclosures and houses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The director said there was a\u00a0 need to provide\u00a0 recreational and educational facilities in the zoo to boost its revenue.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the zoo was established in 1972, it was designed to conserve animals for people to see, render recreational services, serve as a research centre and provide practical educational instructions to students\u201d.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0 said the zoo currently had 58 different species, consisting of 300\u00a0 animals.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of our animals are old and we need more species, such as leopard, cheetah, zebra and rhinoceros,\u201d Lawan said.<\/p>\n

The director said that Kano zoo was the second of its kind in West Africa after Cote d\u2019Ivoire\u2019s and was accredited by the Pan-African Association of Zoos and Aquaria.<\/p>\n

The habitats for\u00a0 animals in the zoo are old and need\u00a0 rehabilitation. (NAN)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
