{"id":429369,"date":"2011-05-24T11:37:36","date_gmt":"2011-05-24T11:37:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/05\/24\/obama-to-visit-tornado-hit-state\/"},"modified":"2011-05-24T11:37:36","modified_gmt":"2011-05-24T11:37:36","slug":"obama-to-visit-tornado-hit-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/05\/24\/obama-to-visit-tornado-hit-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama to visit tornado-hit state"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"86.8700564972\"><span><span>24 May 2011<\/span> <span>Last updated at<\/span> <span>07:37 ET<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>US President Barack Obama says he will visit the tornado-hit state of Missouri on Sunday, straight after returning from a six-day tour of Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday&#8217;s huge tornado cut a path some six miles (10km) long and at least half a mile wide through the city of Joplin, killing at least 116 people.<\/p>\n<p>President Obama said the tornado was &#8220;devastating and heartbreaking&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He vowed the US government would &#8220;do absolutely everything we can&#8221; to help victims recover and rebuild.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Obama was speaking from London before meeting Queen Elizabeth II at the beginning of his stay in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>It is the second stop on a four-country tour of Europe, and Mr Obama is due back in Washington on Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I want everybody in Joplin, everybody in Missouri, everybody in Minnesota, everybody across the Midwest to know that we are here for you,&#8221; said Mr Obama.<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-13518005#story_continues_2\">Continue reading the main story<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Deadly US tornadoes<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>March 1925: Deadliest twister in US history as so-called Tri-State Tornado kills 695 in Missouri, southern Illinois and south-west Indiana<\/li>\n<li>March 1932: Deep South tornado outbreak kills 332 people from Texas to South Carolina, with 270 dying in Alabama alone<\/li>\n<li>May 1840: The Great Natchez Tornado kills 317 people in Mississippi town, most living on flatboats on the river<\/li>\n<li>April 1974: 310 killed in 24-hour &#8220;super outbreak&#8221; of 148 tornadoes across 13 states.<\/li>\n<li>May 1896: Two weeks of storms kill 305 people in Missouri, Illinois and Kentucky<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;The American people are by your side.
