International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda started special depositions on Monday in the case against the most prominent alleged perpetrator of the Rwandan genocide who remains at large: Felicien Kabuga.<\/p>\n<p>According to a press release from the tribunal, the proceedings are being conducted in order to preserve prosecution evidence against Kabunga.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the prosecution applied for and received permission to safeguard evidence against him and two others &#8212; Augustin Bizimana, Rwanda&#8217;s former defense minister, and Maj.Protais Mpiranya, who was commander of the Presidential Guard.<\/p>\n<p>The depositions were permitted under a rule that allows evidence to be preserved for a trial in the future, even if the accused has not been arrested.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecutor in the case fears that evidence against Kabunga, Bizimana and Mpiranya may be lost or deteriorate &#8220;due to the passage of time, death and incapacity of unavailability of witnesses later on.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kabunga is charged with 11 counts, including genocide and crimes against humanity.<\/p>\n<p>The tribunal said it is still looking for 10 fugitives following confirmation of their indictments.<\/p>\n<p>Trials connected to the atrocities that happened in Rwanda are still going on.<\/p>\n<p>On May 17, Augustin Bizimungu, the African nation&#8217;s former army chief, was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
