A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Kwame Amoako Tuffuor has appealed to the National Executives of the party to further expand the party’s Electoral College to include all card bearing members.<\/p>\n
According to him, card bearing members of the party would be denied their rights if they were denied the power to choose\u00a0\u00a0 their Parliamentary and Presidential candidates. Dr. Amoako Tuffuor made the appeal in an interview with The Chronicle in Accra over the weekend.<\/p>\n
He argued that if all card bearing members are allowed to vote, aspirants will have to work harder to market themselves to members of the party at national, regional and constituency levels, adding that ‘Winners will have to work harder for the benefit of the electorate to ensure their re-election’.<\/p>\n
Dr. Amoako Tuffuor, who was the Chief Director of Ghana School Feeding Programme in the previous government, further argued that if the new approach was adopted, the influences of money for votes would be highly reduced.<\/p>\n
This, he said will, give place to competence, ability, dedication, and focus to the party and members as a whole.<\/p>\n
‘The new approach will help to cut off some frustrations and stresses and bickering within the current expanded system of five executives\/polling station where some defeated aspirants feel they are more popular within the entire membership of the constituency’, Dr Amoako Tuffuor stressed.<\/p>\n
The founding member of the largest opposition party emphasized that ‘the new approach can help to prevent aspirants going independent for national elections.’<\/p>\n
Dr. Amoako Tuffuor, who is also the founder of the Kwame Amoako Tuffuor Foundation, told this reporter that ‘by allowing all paid up card bearing members within a constituency to vote, the party can maximize its membership dues’.<\/p>\n
When quizzed on the Nana Addo and Alan factions, Dr, Amoako Tuffuor beamed with smiles, and said the new approach when adopted will kill the two perceived factions\u00a0 in the party.<\/p>\n
NPP had a very successful period of rebuilding after the 2008 general elections. The party’s constitutional amendments of 2009 led to significant expansion of its electoral college for the election of party officers, parliamentary candidates and presidential candidate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
