The ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has drafted some members of the House of Representatives to move a motion on the floor of the House tomorrow with a view to reversing the rule passed recently which provided for open secret ballot in the process of electing a new Speaker on June 6 when the Sixth House will be inaugurated, Deputy Minority Leader Rep Suleiman Abdulrahman Kawu has alleged.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Daily Trust yesterday, Rep Kawu alleged that some members of the House were invited to the Presidential Villa where they struck a deal with the ruling party to revive the issue of the voting process in order to ensure that the party’s anointed candidates finally emerge.<\/p>\n

“We adopted the open secret ballot so that members will be free from intimidation when electing our leadership. But we are aware that they have called some stooges to the villa and given them money to bring back the issue of the voting pattern on the floor,” he said and called on members to be vigilant as the move to deprive them of the freedom to choose their leaders is being perfected.<\/p>\n

He also pleaded with the Presidency and PDP leaders to respect the tenets of democracy and allow for free and fair contest so that a popular leadership will emerge.<\/p>\n

“We don’t want them to impose any candidate on us; they tried it in the past and it failed; therefore they should allow us to choose our members freely,” the lawmaker said.<\/p>\n

PDP and the Presidency have insisted that existing power structure at the National Assembly be retained so that the North Central will occupy the position of Senate President while the South West produces the Speaker of the House.<\/p>\n

Just last week, the Senate reviewed its voting procedure in such a manner as to qualify only the Senate President David Mark and Senator Hayatu Bello Gwarzo who are fourth termers for the contest. A day before the Senate adopted this new rule; the House of Representatives amended its rule to allow for open secret ballot during the voting.<\/p>\n

Several co-ordinated efforts in the House of Representatives have been against the party’s decision to retain the status quo. A group of the legislators cutting across party lines has been pushing for the election of Deputy Chief Whip Rep Aminu Tambuwal from North West.<\/p>\n

Tambuwal is being propped up by the members against the candidate of the party Rep Ajibola Muraina. Muraina is also being challenged by Rep Mulikat Adebola another member from the South West.<\/p>\n

But the PDP leaders are said to be worried that the movement to jettison the party’s decision is spreading fast and may leave its candidate gasping for breath during the election.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, members elect into the Senate and House of Representatives were yesterday engaged in marathon meetings of the various factions seeking leadership of the two chambers of the National Assembly, Daily Trust learnt yesterday.<\/p>\n

A member elect who spoke to our reporter in confidence said various meetings were called by factions supporting candidates for the speakership position in the House of Representatives while on the Senate side, the Senate President David Mark’s team has made contact with all senators-elect to solicit their support.<\/p>\n

He told Daily Trust that “I am from one of the meetings now and I will soon be going for another one. There are several meetings called by the factions that want to produce the speaker of the House.”<\/p>\n

A meeting of all senators and members elect scheduled for yesterday was however shifted as the organisers said it could not hold due to some unforeseen reasons.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the postponement, Alhaji B.Y Sabo, who advertised the meeting, said “the meeting has been shifted because members expressed willingness to take a rest after a week-long induction retreat. So we decided to postpone the meeting until after the inauguration.”<\/p>\n

He however said that the meeting was not aimed at discussing matters that have to do with leadership of the Senate or the House.<\/p>\n

When contacted, PDP spokesman Rufai Ahmed Alkali said he could not react as he was attending a crucial meeting.<\/p>\n
