Foni \u2014 A one-day sensitisation on stigma and discrimination for policymakers, religious leaders and community leaders ended in Brikama recently.<\/p>\n

The forum, held at the Regional Education Office’s Conference Hall, attracted over 30 participants. It is aimed at bringing together policymakers from various levels in the fight against the negative impact of stigma and discrimination.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the forum, the deputy governor of West Coast Region, Fatoumata Sanyang, expressed delight for being associated with the sensitisation, pointing out that stigma and discrimination remain barriers in the fight against HIVAIDS. She urged the participants to make best use of the knowledge gained and to disseminate the information to respective institutions, the community and the people at large.<\/p>\n

For his part, the National AIDS Secretariat’s programme administrator for Global Fund, Ousman Njie, said AIDS-related stigma and discrimination refers to prejudice, negative attitudes, abuse and maltreatment directed at people living with HIV. According to him stigma does not only make it more difficult for people trying to come to terms with HIV and manage their illness on a personal level, but it also interferes with attempts to fight the AIDS epidemic. Njie pointed out that at a national level the stigma associated with HIV can deter government from taking fast and effective action against the epidemic.<\/p>\n

Dawda Joof, Action-Aid programme manager, said HIV-related stigma is caused by silence, rejection and isolation and limits the ability of people living with HIV or those seen as having the disease to cope with their condition. He commended the participants for their large turn-out and urged them to strengthen the fight against stigma and discrimination.<\/p>\n

In his power point presentation on HIV AIDS related stigma and discrimination, the West Coast Region’s AIDS coordinator, Kebba Jome, said stigma can be described as the quality that significantly discredits an individual in the eyes of others. He further said that it also has consequences for the way in which individuals see themselves. Discrimination, he noted, occurs when a distinction is made against a person, that results in his or her being treated unfairly and unjustly on the basis of their belonging, or being perceived to belong to a particular group.<\/p>\n

Joof said responding to HIV and AIDS with shame or abuse towards people living with HIV and AIDS forces the epidemic underground, creating the ideal condition for the epidemic to spread. He stressed that the only way of making progress against the epidemic is to replace shame with solidarity and fear with hope.<\/p>\n

The West Coast Region’s AIDS Data Entry officer, Lamin Njie, also presented a paper on the Global Fund grant and the ‘three-one principle’, whilst the National Assembly member for Foni Bondali, Hon. Mattar Kujabi, gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the participants. The programme ended with a question and answer session and recommendations made by the participants.<\/p>\n
