{"id":428561,"date":"2011-05-23T10:06:26","date_gmt":"2011-05-23T10:06:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/05\/23\/uks-actis-to-sell-off-its-stake-in-bcr\/"},"modified":"2011-05-23T10:06:26","modified_gmt":"2011-05-23T10:06:26","slug":"uks-actis-to-sell-off-its-stake-in-bcr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/05\/23\/uks-actis-to-sell-off-its-stake-in-bcr\/","title":{"rendered":"UK&#8217;s Actis to Sell Off Its Stake in BCR"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"48.752824099\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newtimes.co.rw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/newtimes180.jpg\" alt=\"The New Times (Kigali)\" title=\"Visit The New Times (Kigali)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Saul Butera<\/p>\n<p>21 May 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>London \u2014 London-based private equity investor, Actis, plans to exit the Rwandan market by selling its shares in Rwanda Commerciale Bank (BCR), Business Times learnt.<\/p>\n<p>Actis, which has investments across Africa, China, Latin America, South and South East Asia has 80 percent shares in BCR and is sought to be in talks with a yet to be revealed Kenyan bank for a possible purchase.<\/p>\n<p>The remaining 20 percent are owned by the government of Rwanda.<\/p>\n<p>Finance Minister, John Rwangombwa, confirmed to Business Times in a phone interview yesterday, saying that the government is still in the early stages of discussions with potential buyers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are looking for a potential buyer\/ lender who will have an impact on the bank and the economy but discussions are still at their early stages,&#8221; Rwangombwa said.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, declined to mention whether government will sale its 20 percent in the bank.<\/p>\n<p>Actis&#8217;s Head of Africa, Peter Schmid, recently told news agencies that: &#8220;A natural acquisition for one of the bigger East African banks wanting to expand their footprint.&#8221; Adding, &#8220;That&#8217;s a probable exit scenario.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While acquiring the bank, Actis promised to position BCR as the leading commercial bank in the country.<\/p>\n<p>BCR&#8217;s profit after tax increased more than two fold to Rwf2.6 billion in 2010 from Rwf0.9 billion in 2009 as its loan books expanded by Rwf4 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The bank&#8217;s cost income ratio, which is the indicator of operating efficiency, is one of the best in the industry at 72 percent from above 89 percent in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>After a successful bid in 2004 under the government&#8217;s policy of privatising most of its controlled investments, Actis acquired 80 percent shares in BCR with government retaining only 20 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The deal was valued at $USD6 million (Rwf3.5 billion).<\/p>\n<p>Actis is a leading private equity investor in emerging markets and has been investing exclusively in these markets for nearly 60 years.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<fieldset>\n<legend align=\"center\"><strong>More News on allAfrica.com<\/strong><\/legend>\n<\/fieldset>\n<p>AllAfrica &#8211; All the Time<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>More:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/201105230641.html\" title=\"UK's Actis to Sell Off Its Stake in BCR\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UK&#8217;s Actis to Sell Off Its Stake in BCR<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> Saul Butera 21 May 2011 London \u2014 London-based private equity investor, Actis, plans to exit the Rwandan market by selling its shares in Rwanda Commerciale Bank (BCR), Business Times learnt.
