ABOUT 60 armed policemen from Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Friday evening, arrested the security adviser to Benue State Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Mr. Adaa Maagbe and the immediate past council chairman of Gboko local council, Mr. Simon Abua Yajir.<\/p>\n

The PDP had on Thursday, through its state chairman, Dr. Agbo Emmanuel, sought the prosecution of ACN officials for alleged involvement in a public procession on Tuesday after ACN candidate, Professor Steve Ugbah, filed a petition challenging the election of Governor Suswam.<\/p>\n

Emmanuel said the procession was done without police permission, claiming that roads were blocked in the course of the procession, which he described as provocative.<\/p>\n

The policemen, who drove in a two-truck convoy, arrived Makurdi at about 3pm and were sighted at the Mobile Police Squadron 13 Headquarters in Makurdi from where their Benue counterparts led them to the homes of the arrested.<\/p>\n

Maagbe and Yajir were dragged into the trucks and spirited away to Abuja for interrogation.<\/p>\n

Calls and text messages made to the Benue State Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Mohammed, for comment received no response.<\/p>\n

The mobile police team also went to the homes of Senator George Akume and Ugbah where they dropped letters of invitation from the Inspector General of Police.<\/p>\n

Media assistant to Senator George Akume, Mrs Beckie Orpin, in an interview with The Guardian, confirmed the arrests.<\/p>\n

Also speaking, Director General of the Ugbah Campaign Organisation, Professor David Iornem, said that he was equally invited by the State Security Service last Wednesday and interrogated for hours over the jubilation of ACN supporters after its candidate filed his petition.<\/p>\n

Iornem said that the State Security Service (SSS) threatened to take action against the party should members attend proceedings when hearing on Ugbah\u2019s petition begins.<\/p>\n

He said the party would be approaching the court to restrain the SSS from harassing its members, if they desire to attend.<\/p>\n

Iornem said thousands of supporters who took to the streets in celebration last Tuesday after Ugbah filed his petition were not mobilised by the party.<\/p>\n

According to him, they were enthusiastic members who were happy that their governorship candidate had started the process of retrieving the mandate they gave to him through a legal process.<\/p>\n
