One of his many ‘sins’ is that he did not give instructions to the army and naval personnel to assist the PDP win elections in the riverside areas of the state.

Candidates of the PDP who have the riverside communities as part of the constituency, therefore decided to get back at the minister after the elections by ensuring that his name was not re-presented for nomination as minister. First, Kayode was suspended from the PDP through a statement by its state Chairman, Dr. Tayo Dairo, and the Secretary, Mr. Olusola Oludipe.

The party accused him of allegedly conniving with the Labour Party to rig the PDP out of the three elections in the state with the use of military personnel.

However, the minister, has since described his alleged suspension from the party as “a pathetic ruse, illegal, unconstitutional, null and void and of no effect or consequence.”

Kayode in a statement in Akure through his Personal Assistant, Dr. Banji Ajaka, alleged that the party in the state by the action had been taken over by a cabal who were working against the content and spirit of the party’s constitution.

The statement noted that there had never been a time that the minister was called upon by the party to explain any of his actions both at his private and official capacity.

Kayode also insisted that he had no regrets for supporting President Goodluck Jonathan’s decision to conduct a free and fair election, just as he had no apologies for delivering the state for the president at the April 16 presidential poll.

He said, “This new distraction was a calculated attempt by some dead woods in the party to further polarise it instead of joining hands with him in his efforts at building a strong party for future elections.”

But as Kayode is thinking of building a more formidable PDP, the party executive in the state is planning another thing for the minister. For instance, following Jonathan’s directive that state chapters of the party should submit names of members for consideration as ministers, special advisers, the names of the Defence Minister and some other key stakeholders in the state were not short-listed by the state executive.

Indeed, the development degenerated into a free-for-all when scores of obviously enraged party members, especially youths last Monday, took over the party secretariat on Oyemekun Akure and sacked the workers and members of the state working committee.

The list, SUNDAY PUNCH gathered, has the names of a former governor of the state, Dr. Olusegun Agagu, who contested the senatorial seat, but was defeated by Mr. Boluwaji Kunlere of the LP. It also featured the name of Agagu’s former deputy, Chief Omolade Oluwateru and billionaire politician, Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim.

Others are Senator Bode Olajumoke, Gbenga Elegbeleye, and Febi Adeyemi; the party’s National Legal Adviser, Chief Olusola Oke, Dairo, Mrs. Foluke Akinjoko and the Special Adviser to Jonathan on Amnesty Issues, Kingsley Kuku.

However, the party’s Director of Publicity, Ayo Fadaka, has described the invasion as a normal occurrence in politics.

He said, “Sometimes such conflicts may arise from ephemeral issues but importantly, it is imperative to state that what happened is already being addressed by the party leadership with a view to calming frayed nerves and promoting unity in the party.”

As Fadaka is putting up this defence, a new dimension was added into the entire scenario a day after the secretariat invasion when an influential group within the party in the state, under the aegis of PDP Coalition Forum, asked the Presidency to reject the list of ministerial nominees submitted to it by the state chapter of the party.

The forum which expressed the fears that the party would die a natural death in the state if the presidency should appoint any of the ministerial nominees contained in the list, added that the names were arrived at without adequate consultations from the stakeholders.

The forum Coordinator, Mr. Ade Babalola, which claimed that it had a broad-based support across the state said, “If this list is allowed to sail through, we want to say with every sense of responsibility that the PDP is dead in this state.”

He wondered why the name of a serving minister was not included in the list.

The forum added, “The majority of the names on that list are known enemies of the party who brought the PDP to its present prostrate position. They were in control of the party and yet they brought us to this sorry state.”

A former Information Commissioner in the state, Dr. Eddy Olafeso said, “The list cannot be allowed to stay because those names were drawn up by some people without any regard to the growth of the party. It is against all the known rules of the party therefore it is null and void.”

However, the party’s state Publicity Secretary, Chief Adeyemi Adedipe, dismissed the forum’s claim, saying the list was put together by credible leaders of the party after a series of consultations and considerations.

He said, “Everybody participated in the selection process. We even had elections at the local government level. Those who are complaining now were those that were defeated in the democratic process.”

Again, just the drama is going on, only last Tuesday some leaders and stakeholders of the party in the state, announced the suspension of Agagu from the party. They also announced the dissolution of the Dairo-led executive and its replacement with a nine-member interim management committee to harmonise all factions in the party.

The development, which was announced by a former Special Adviser on Political Affairs to Agagu, Chief Segun Adegoke, on behalf of the leaders, has indeed further worsened the crisis rocking the big umbrella in the state.

The leaders said they rejected the suspension of Kayode from the party as well as the 10-man ministerial list allegedly compiled by Agagu and Dairo.

Reacting to the development, Dairo said the people who he described as “spent forces in their local government areas,” lacked the locus standi to proclaim the state executive dissolved or to suspend any member of the party.

He said, “The list being complained about was complied with due process by the state working committee and 15 leaders of the party across the state. These leaders are spent forces in their constituencies, as far as we are concerned they are not known to our party, they are not known to the constitution because they are ex-this, ex-that.

“We want them to know that this is not an Obaship institution where once you assume the leader, you are there for life, their local government areas have produced vibrant young men that have displaced many of these people,” Dairo stated.

Oluwateru also said the leaders and stakeholders had no right to suspend anybody from the party and that the list being contested was compiled with input from the SWC and some party leaders.

Oluwateru said, “They said they are dissolving the exco and who are they, what are their positions in the party? There are ways of doing this, the executive council was constituted by a congress and it is only the congress that can dissolve the executive, so it is very wrong for a handful set of people to hire people and pronounce the exco dissolved.”

However, Adegoke said, “Agagu, as the leader was suspended because he led the party to inexplicable and inexcusable electoral failure and for accentuating the unending crisis in the party, which had brought the party to its comatose state.”

According to him, the leaders and the stakeholders of the party have also resolved that the former governor should account for the enormous amount of money contributed by members of the party as welfare fund.

He added, “The leaders and stakeholders resolved to dissolve the state executive committee of the party in the state and will set up a panel to investigate the finances of the party since February 2009.

“We will also investigate the over N30m contributed by party members for the building of the state secretariat, the N10m donated by Alhaji Abubakar Atiku and all monies for the various elections in the state.

“The leaders and stakeholders reject the suspension of the party members from the party without hearing and/or due process and urge the interim management committee to review all such cases.”

Adegoke said it would be wrong and politically suicidal to allow the Dairo-led executive that had led the party to five electoral contests without a victory to continue in office and compound the woes of the party.

Beyond the suspension, the Adegoke faction has also come up with the list of members who will take over the affairs of the party in the state as interim management committee.

Some members of the committee are Prof Olu Agbi, a former Nigeria’s Ambassador to Greece, who will serve as the chairman; Mr. Demola Ijabiyi, who is the secretary and Prince Mike Omogbemi, the Publicity Secretary.

Others are Mr. Tony Jaiyeola, Mr. Femi Omosanya, Mr. Dele Teniola, Mr. Ademola Adeyemi, Mr. Sam Olowomeye, Chief A. Odor, Chief (Mrs.) Kudi Obaya, Chief (Mrs.) Femi Omoboyowa, and Chief (Mrs.) Joke Oluwafemi.

So as it is, the PDP in the state is in for some troubles and until something tangible is done to reconcile the different gladiators, close observers and analysts say the ongoing crisis may finally consume the party that is daily losing its popularity and place in the state.

See the article here:
In Ondo, ministerial list tears the umbrella apart

Still counting their painful loss in the just concluded elections, leaders and members of the Ondo State Peoples Democratic Party are again in another fresh crisis that may finally bury the party in the state, SUNDAY ABORISADE reports The Minister of Defence, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode, (SAN) is in the centre of the controversy that has now torn the big umbrella of the Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party into an un-amendable shreds.

[13

0":"post-428004","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-sports
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 -
