AU convenes extraordinary Summit on Libya<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Addis Ababa\u00a0 \u2013 The UN Security Council (UNSC) and the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) on Saturday demanded the immediate establishment of ceasefire in Libya.<\/p>\n

A communiqu\u00e9 issued in Addis Ababa after a meeting by the two Councils which discussed and reviewed situations in Libya, Sudan, Cote d\u2019Ivoire and Somalia called for an end to violence and attacks against, and abuse of, civilians and a solution to the crisis.<\/p>\n

Mr Ramtane Lamamra, the AU Commissioner for Peace and Security, who declared the meeting open, however, said\u00a0 that there was no deadline for the demanded ceasefire.<\/p>\n

The two Councils stressed the need for such a ceasefire to be credible and verifiable, and encouraged the AU and the UN, as well as other stakeholders to spare no efforts in achieving the objective.<\/p>\n

The joint meeting also expressed concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Libya and called for full compliance with human rights and International Humanitarian Law and the creation of the required conditions for the delivery of assistance to all needy populations across the country.<\/p>\n

It also stressed the need to provide specific support to\u00a0 African migrant workers living in Libya, including those seeking to leave the country.<\/p>\n

Both councils also expressed readiness to assist the Ivorian government in rebuilding its institutions and completing the unfinished aspects of the peace process, including the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration process, Security Sector Reform and other reunification tasks.<\/p>\n

They also reaffirmed their support to the Ivorian authorities\u2019 efforts aimed at promoting justice and reconciliation, including the planned establishment of a Truth, Dialogue and Reconstruction Commission, and the investigation of alleged post-election human rights violation.<\/p>\n

The Councils also expressed deep concern over increased violence in the Abyei region of Sudan, and called on both Sudan and the South Sudan to adhere to recent security agreements and to urgently reach an agreement on Abyei\u2019s post-Comprehensive Peace Agreement status.<\/p>\n

The meeting also stressed the importance of a comprehensive response to tackle piracy and its underlying causes, and protection of Somalia\u2019s natural resources and waters.<\/p>\n

The meeting was co-chaired by Mr Gerard Araud,\u00a0 France\u2019s Ambassador to the UN and the Chair of the UNSC and Mr Lungile Pepeni, the South African Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the AU and the Chair of the PSC.<\/p>\n

The next consultative meeting would hold in New York not later than July 2012.<\/p>\n

AU convenes extraordinary Summit on Libya<\/em><\/strong>
Addis Ababa, \u2013 Mr Ramtane Lamamra, AU Commissioner for Peace and Security (PSC) on Saturday said the Commission would next week hold an extraordinary Summit on the current situation in Libya.<\/p>\n

Lamamra in Addis Ababa said that the summit was scheduled to hold on May 25 and 26, immediately after the Africa \u2013 India Forum Summit which would be attended by many African leaders.<\/p>\n

He said the Summit was a follow up to the decision of the 275th meeting of the AU PSC held at Ministerial level on April 11, and other consultations among Member States.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe session will be devoted to the consideration of the state of security in Africa in the light of challenges and crisis facing the continent. It will provide an opportunity to review the situation in Libya on the basis of the work carried out by the AU High-Level Panel on Libya.\u2019\u2019, he said.<\/p>\n

Lamamra said the Summit would also discuss other conflict situations in other parts of\u00a0 Africa with a view to find an early resolution.<\/p>\n

He said it would also build on earlier PSC decisions and follow-up actions taken by the Commission and other organs of the Union.<\/p>\n

President Goodluck Jonathan would be represented at both Summits by Vice President Namadi Sambo.\u00a0 (NAN)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
