Abuja \u2013 The Catholic Archdiocese of\u00a0 Abuja is to\u00a0 partner\u00a0 with the Federal Government on the\u00a0 Renewable Energy Programme\u00a0 aimed at\u00a0 addressing\u00a0 the impact of climate change.<\/p>\n

Rev. Sister\u00a0 Agatha Chikelue, the Administrator of\u00a0 the archdiocese, said this on Saturday during a visit\u00a0 to the National Coordinator of\u00a0 the Renewable Energy Programme, Mrs\u00a0 Bahijjahtu Abubakar<\/p>\n

Chikelue said the partnership became necessary due to the devastating effect of climate change in the rural communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cClimate change cuts across borders and its impact is felt by everybody; as stakeholders on\u00a0 the issue of\u00a0 the environment,\u00a0 we should not leave the issue of finding a solution to the adverse impact of climate change to the government alone.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all must come together and join hands with the government in its effort to tackle the issue of adverse impact of climate change and the preservation and conservation of our environment,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n

She\u00a0 stressed\u00a0 the importance of faith-based\u00a0 organisations in community awareness initiatives, saying government must integrate them in its efforts\u00a0 at\u00a0 tackling the impact of climate change.<\/p>\n

Chikelue said the\u00a0 archdiocese\u00a0 had been creating awareness\u00a0 among church members, school children and rural communities, adding that they were veritable tools\u00a0 for\u00a0 disseminating information on the dangers of\u00a0 climate change.<\/p>\n

Responding, Abubakar said that the\u00a0 partnership of the archdiocese\u00a0 with government was\u00a0 a welcome development.<\/p>\n

She said with the partnership,\u00a0 the\u00a0 initiative of\u00a0 using solar energy as an alternative to electricity would be welcomed in the rural areas,\u00a0 especially by women.<\/p>\n

Abubakar said lack of\u00a0\u00a0 rural electricity was\u00a0 hampering\u00a0 educational attainment while worsening\u00a0 poverty and quality of\u00a0 life in rural communities.<\/p>\n

She,\u00a0 however,\u00a0 said the\u00a0 renewable energy Solar Kit Project would address the electricity challenge in\u00a0 rural communities.<\/p>\n

The project, she said, was\u00a0 the Federal Government\u2019s\u00a0 initiative\u00a0\u00a0 to\u00a0 address\u00a0 the impact of climate change in\u00a0 rural communities.<\/p>\n

She urged\u00a0 the archdiocese to assist\u00a0 government in driving the project in\u00a0 rural communities, adding that other\u00a0\u00a0 programmes\u00a0 to\u00a0 assist rural\u00a0 people adapt to\u00a0 the impact of climate change were\u00a0 underway. (NAN)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
