OWERRI\u2014The uninterrupted pattern of neglect and low priority which the education sector has consistently suffered from government have been identified as some of the major problems militating against education in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

Senator Uche Chukwumerije stated this while delivering the 24th Convocation Lecture of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, FUTO.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cWhat puzzles many is the uninterrupted pattern of neglect and low priority which education system has consistently suffered from government, in spite of numerous recommendations and official blueprints on remedial reforms Chukwumerije said.<\/p>\n

He said the heavy toll of delay in finding effective solution to the decay of education syste on the nation\u2019s development is already evident everywhere.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the economic front, there is growing mass unemployment generated by irrelevant curricula, the education system is unable to produce educated manpower skilled for hired or self employment and is incapable of growing the economy,\u201d Chukwumerije reasoned.<\/p>\n

He further lamented that Nigeria has remained an import-driven economy, adding that 50 years after independence, Nigeria\u2019s education system is still going through the motions of preliminary processes of import-substitution and interminable transition of customs waivers for local manufacturers.<\/p>\n

\u201cSurely, Nigeria is on the verge of losing her sovereignty to the ruthless forces of globalization. On the social front, the national value system has collapsed. Education, which should be the nursery and relay point of positive values, is itself being progressively crippled with corruption\u201d, Chukwumerije said.<\/p>\n

Earlier in his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of FUTO, Professor Chigozie Asiabaka, lamented that the foundation upon which tertiary education rests has for long been under severe threat by a variety of factors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
