Manchester United<\/a> goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar<\/a> has admitted he is dreading saying his farewells ahead of his last game at Old Trafford on Sunday against Blackpool<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Dutchman, 40, confirmed earlier in the season he would retire in May, but has now revealed that the actual prospect of hanging up his boots did not hit home until a few weeks ago.<\/p>\n

Despite pleas from team-mates and fans alike, Van der Sar will step out at Old Trafford for the last time, and will wear the captain’s armband for United’s final Premier League game of the season.<\/p>\n

But the goalkeeper has conceded that Sunday will be an emotional time for him as he prepares for life away from the game.<\/p>\n

“I am not looking forward to it,” Van der Sar told MUTV<\/em>.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“It is a sad moment. You don’t look forward to those. I just have to make the best of it.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I wouldn’t say it has come round quickly. I had not really been thinking about it. Once I knew what I was going to do, I remained focussed on the games and the training.<\/span><\/p>\n

“It is only in the last two weeks that it has really sunk in that I am running out of time.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Hopefully though, the memories I will get this weekend I will be able to keep with me for the rest of my life.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Although Van der Sar will be saying his Old Trafford goodbyes on Sunday he will still have one more outing in at United shirt, next Saturday when the Red Devils take on Barcelona in the Champions League final at Wembley.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
