He described the alleged actions of the PIU officers who are standing trial for their involvement in the death of one Demba Sibey of Numuyel village in Upper River Region (URR) as unfortunate, shocking and uncalled for.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;As officers, we should be mindful of the way and manner we conduct ourselves. We are here as law enforcement officers not to violate what we are supposed to protect.&#8221; The Police spokesman stated that the law is very clear in terms of arrest. He explained that officers are only ordered to use minimum force to get the accused or the suspect arrested and that any other force that is extra-ordinary is definitely not accepted at the end of the day.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that the case involving the four PIU officers&#8217; shows that police officers or other security officers for that matter, are not above the law. Asked whether the four PIU officers acted within the law, the Police spokesperson declined to comment on that, stressing that it is now up to the court to decide whether the officers&#8217; actions are in line with the law or not. &#8220;This is why they are charged before a court of law,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Asked whether it is in the mandate of the police or other security apparatus to assault or beat anyone during arrest or while under detention, the PRO answered in the negative, saying police should not assault at any cost either during arrest or when the accused or suspect is under detention.
