Abuja \u2013 President\u00a0 Goodluck Jonathan on Friday called for the transformation of\u00a0 the arts and crafts industry to\u00a0 boost the country\u2019s foreign exchange earnings.<\/p>\n

Jonathan, represented by the Minister of\u00a0 State for\u00a0 FCT, retired Navy Capt. Omoniyi Olubolade,\u00a0 said this\u00a0 in Abuja at the 4th African Arts and crafts Expo (AFAC) which had as theme: \u201cCrafts Industry for Economic Transformation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no doubt the arts and crafts\u00a0\u00a0 represent a veritable promising investment opportunity yet to be meaningful exploited.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am, therefore,\u00a0 glad that the expo has been initiated as an effective platform that will create\u00a0 the much required consciousness to enable us take a structured look at this vibrant sector,\u2019\u2019\u00a0 Jonathan said.<\/p>\n

He challenged practitioners to strive toward acquiring the necessary skills to enhance the\u00a0 production of goods to compete favourably in the global market.<\/p>\n

Jonathan assured that government would support the arts expo to attain the level of\u00a0 becoming\u00a0 the biggest market platform that would promote indigenous skills and creativity.<\/p>\n

The Minister of\u00a0 Tourism, Culture and National Orientation, Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed, said the expo was a platform for\u00a0 economic and socio-cultural integration.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe expo will promote import and export of African arts and crafts worldwide, sensitise\u00a0 investors as well as attract public\/private partnership to the industry,\u2019\u2019 Mohammed said.<\/p>\n

In his goodwill\u00a0 message, ECOWAS President,\u00a0 Amb. James Gbeho,\u00a0 who was represented\u00a0 by Mrs Ruby David,\u00a0 said the expo could address the problems of mono economies, massive\u00a0 unemployment and poverty.<\/p>\n

He said Nigeria\u2019s cultural industry\u00a0 should be encouraged to grow to its full potentials.<\/p>\n

Also speaking, the Executive Director of\u00a0 the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC),\u00a0 Mr Mwajim Maidugu, said investors should identify designs and products that could be\u00a0 developed for mass production for domestic and international markets.<\/p>\n

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 11\u00a0 countries attended the expo.<\/p>\n

They are Senegal, South Korea, Gambia, Togo, Cameroun, Benin Republic, Ghana,\u00a0 Pakistan, Niger, Guinea and Mali.(NAN)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
