Blackpool ‘a breath of fresh air’ – Richard Scudamore<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore says claims that they want relegation-threatened Blackpool out of the competition are nonsense.<\/p>\n

The Seasiders are 18th in the table and boss Ian Holloway says the League would be “relieved” to lose them.<\/p>\n

“They’ve been a breath of fresh air, they’ve come up on sporting merit and played positively, therefore they deserve it,” Scudamore told BBC Sport.<\/p>\n

“If on Sunday they still deserve that place they’re welcome to stay.”<\/p>\n

Sunday’s season finale sees a remarkable situation at the foot of the table, with five teams – Blackpool, Blackburn, Wolves, Birmingham and Wigan – all in contention for two relegation places, with just one point covering the five of them.<\/p>\n

Blackpool face the most daunting task of any of the struggling sides, away to newly-crowned champions Manchester United.<\/p>\n

The mathematics of the situation<\/a> mean that even if Blackpool become the first visitors to win at Old Trafford this season, they could still be relegated, or conversely that they could lose – but still stay up.<\/p>\n

Holloway has already reacted angrily to the suggestion that United may field a weakened team, with next weekend’s Champions League final against Barcelona at Wembley being considered a bigger priority.<\/p>\n

“Sir Alex Ferguson is a winner. He would never dream of not being interested in winning any match,” said Holloway.<\/p>\n

“That man deserves to pick whatever team he wants to pick. No one should question it.”<\/p>\n

Earlier this season, Blackpool were fined \u00a325,000 by the Premier League<\/a> for fielding a weakened team against Aston Villa.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
