THE 50-year-old man who cut his throat with a razor blade at Pewodie, a village near Adansi Anwiaso in the Ashanti region, has been slapped with a three-month jail term for attempted suicide by a circuit court in Obuasi.<\/p>\n
Kwadwo Ababio, a farmer and resident of Akrofuom, decided to end his life with the claim that the people in his community disliked him.<\/p>\n
He was saved by a cocoa farmer, who saw him on time and reported his bloody conduct to the chief of Pewodie who took him to the New Edubiase Government Hospital, after the chief\u2019s subjects had gone to his (Ababio\u2019s) rescue.<\/p>\n
Ababio was convicted on his plea of guilty to the charge of attempted suicide, contrary to section 57 of Act 29\/60, and sentenced accordingly by the court presided over by Gilbert Ayisi Addo.<\/p>\n
In sentencing the accused, the judged remarked: \u201cIt is only by good fortune that the injuries inflicted did not prove fatal. You won\u2019t be lucky next time.\u201d Inspector Albert Anani, police prosecutor, earlier informed the court that the complainants were police officers at Adansi Anwiaso police station, while the accused was a farmer and resident of Akrofuom.<\/p>\n
According to him, on April 16, 2011, at about 8:45am, Yaw Nkyi, who was a witness in the case, visited his cocoa farm at Pewodie. Prosecution stated that while the witness was working in his farm, he heard someone reciting incantations from one end of the cocoa farm.<\/p>\n
Nkyi, who became curious, moved towards the direction of the incantation where he found the accused kneeling with blood all over his body.<\/p>\n
Horrified by the incident, the witness quickly ran back to the community and informed the chief about the incident, after which he also mobilized his subjects and went to the scene.<\/p>\n
Prosecution disclosed that the people found the accused with multiple razor blade cuts on his throat and blood on his entire body. Ababio was sent to the Anwiaso Police Station before being taken to the hospital where he was treated. Inspector Anani said Ababio told police officers that he had wanted to end his life because the people in his community disliked him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
