The Senegalese PM, whose visit came hard on the heels of recent exchange visits by the Foreign Affairs ministers of the two countries geared towards strengthening the bond of relationship that binds the two countries was received by President Jammeh at his Kanilai residence. The closed-door meeting in Kanilai availed the two governments the opportunity to discuss an array of issues pertinent to the ties between Banjul and Dakar.

Speaking to journalists shortly after their closed-door meeting, the president of the Republic, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh underscored the significance of having regular dialogue and consultations between Banjul and Dakar, while stressing the need for the peace and unity between the two countries to be strengthened because as he puts it, the two people are one in two countries.

He said: “There is no one in The Gambia who doesn’t have a relative in Senegal and there is no Senegalese who doesn’t have a relative in The Gambia. Any tribe you see in The Gambia is in Senegal so we are one but two countries. Of recent we have seen the transport unions of both countries having problems but we [the Gambia government] have consulted the government of Senegal to solve the issue and the efforts and consultations made by us in solving that problem is clear to the Senegalese government.”

President Jammeh reiterated the fact that the two countries have agreed on establishing the Senegalo-Gambia Permanent Secretariat with a view to easing a lot of issues between them. This, he told journalists also formed the basis of their closed-door discussion. “I am very happy because we should always promote peace, dialogue and consultation between the two countries,” he averred.

“No problem with Wade”

When asked if he [President Jammeh] has any problem with President Abdoulaye Wade, the Gambian leader made it clear that he has “no problem” with his Senegalese counterpart. “In fact I have never had any problem with any Senegalese. You know you journalists will just jump and say things that do not happen yet. But I have no problems with anyone. Sometimes when I read newspapers I see them writing about serious issues which you don’t even know where they come from. But you know in life, some people live ‘saatan’ [evil] and they always want to create trouble,” he emphasised.

While acknowledging that The Gambia and Senegal have no problem, the president asserted that even the teeth and the tongue which are in the same mouth do crush on each other sometimes. He added: “Sometimes journalists write terrible stories which one cannot imagine. But life is like that – you don’t expect everybody to like you and you don’t expect everyone to hate you as well. The Almighty Allah is seeing and hearing us, which alone are enough. If anyone thinks that I have problem with Abdoulaye Wade, then you are the one who knows that because I don’t have any problem with Abdoulaye Wade or any Senegalese.”

The Senegalese prime minister, His Excellency Souleymane Ndéné Ndiaye for his part, equally underscored that the relationship between The Gambia and Senegal should not be spoiled by mere talk or smear campaigns, saying “because the ties is much more important to us than press freedom and democracy”. Prime Minister Ndiaye equally emphasised that the two people are one in two countries, averring that it was the colonial masters that divided them. He also disclosed that President Wade sent him to Banjul as a special envoy to President Jammeh to reaffirm his commitment in cementing the relationship between the two countries. According to PM Ndiaye, his president also seized this opportunity through him to thank President Jammeh for his efforts in promoting peace and unity between the two countries and for contributing immensely in solving the recent problems between the transport unions of The Gambia and Senegal.

He equally confirmed to journalists that their discussion also centered on the establishment of the Senegalo-Gambia Permanent Secretariat. The Senegalese prime minster concluded by describing President Jammeh as a Pan-Africanist, saying his efforts in promoting African unity and peace is attested to by all. While further commending the Gambian leader for the hospitality accorded to him and his delegation, Prime Minister Ndiaye prayed for peace and unity to continue to prevail between the two countries.

<fieldset>
<legend align="center">More News on allAfrica.com</legend>
</fieldset>

AllAfrica – All the Time

More:
Banjul, Dakar Intensify Bilateral Engagements

The Daily Observer (Banjul) Hatab Fadera 19 May 2011 The bilateral engagements and consultations between the sister Republics of The Gambia and Senegal aimed at fortifying the existing bond of relationship between Banjul and Dakar have been intensified with the latest visit to the country by the Senegalese prime minister.

[17

0":"post-427183","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-world
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 -
