Robert Mugabe has dismissed as ‘misplaced’ the reports that his health is failing, telling the state media that he and his wife Grace are both in ‘sound health’.<\/p>\n

In an interview published by the state’s mouthpiece, the Herald newspaper on Thursday, Mugabe said he still exercised regularly and that his only ailment was a recent eye cataract operation in Singapore. He also said that his wife was undergoing physiotherapy in China for a dislocated hip which may have been made worse by exercise.<\/p>\n

“I am not old. I am 87 but my body says the counting doesn’t end at 87, at least you must get to 100,” he told the newspaper.<\/p>\n

The ageing ZANU PF leader has been traveling back and forth to Singapore in recent months for medical treatment, and it has been widely reported that the octogenarian is suffering from prostate cancer. He has also been in a visibly weakened state of late, needing to be transported around a regional summit in Zambia in March in a golf cart.<\/p>\n

South Africa’s ruling ANC party has meanwhile also said this week it is worried about Mugabe’s declining health, and what this will mean for the shaky unity government. In a newsletter released on Wednesday, the party said Mugabe’s failing health could jeopardise efforts to resolve the political crisis. The ANC, whose President Jacob Zuma is the regional mediator in Zimbabwe, repeated the concerns raised by Zuma’s facilitation team, “should Mugabe die or retire” before constitutional reforms are complete, rivalry over his succession could delay elections.<\/p>\n

“Negotiators are also concerned about the succession law should Mugabe die or retire before the adoption of a new constitution, which is still being negotiated,” the ANC said on its website.<\/p>\n

ZANU PF has been pushing for a poll as early as possible, which observers have said is linked to Mugabe’s obviously failing health. The party has also been at pains to deny any reports that he is unwell, insisting that his foreign travels are related to his eye problem and nothing more serious.<\/p>\n

But the rumours and speculation are clearly hitting a nerve in the party, if Mugabe has had to publicly announce his good health.<\/p>\n
