Those who have been described by a senior presidential adviser as the dregs of society, the stone and rock hurlers, the great unwashed of the slums certainly understand that it has not been well for quite some time. But there are others who think all is not well because protesters want to have a say in the governance of the country – a guaranteed right by the way.

We have in the past month seen and continue to see that those who come out to exercise their civic right to participate in their own governance are killed, some maimed, some beaten, some arrested and some detained. Those who are in control of government, the minority who benefit from huge budgets for ceremonies that can cost billions less are also shedding tears, crocodile ones of course, claiming that property is lost when the so-called dregs of society come out to show dissatisfaction with the regime.

There is untold anger almost in every corner of the political divide. The military shows untold anger and brutality as it canes and shoots at civilians. There are protesters who have not thrown a single stone at anyone during the protests but they can testify as to having been beaten, shot at and teargassed. When shot at, beaten, teargassed for committing no crime, the human defensive instinct can take over and some people can throw stones at gun-wielding men. It is of course recommendable that such persecution should not make the protesters bitter but rather should strengthen their resolve, but people are different.

The non-partisan Johnson Karengye Mujungu of the International Community for Banyakigezi (ICOB) is on record for calling for mutual respect between all sides in order to make progress. Several opposition figures, including Dr Kizza Besigye, have called on their supporters not to carry out any revenge attacks against the military and police.

On my part, my personal secret of controlling temper can be of much help. My breathe-in, breathe-out repeatedly exercise is an important tool that can benefit the country, but most importantly, the pro-Museveni side, where it is notable that no one is calling for calm. All we hear is that the protesters will be crushed! Many times, reading comments from pro-Museveni individuals and some senior government officials takes one aback.

They take the matter of shooting, beating, teargassing and maiming civilians so simplistically and they vulgarise the matter. They seem to be forgetting that Uganda is for all of us, all colours and shades of Ugandans, whether we share political opinion or not. They pretend not to know that those who peacefully protest have equal rights as those who are plundering the country.

The extremism of this side is ashaming some times. One recently opined that she would return her Ugandan passport if Besigye became president! Of course the Walk-to-Work protests are not about ousting Museveni. What compounds the problem is that such thinking seems to be dominant in the circles that make crucial decisions that will shape our destiny.

I therefore call upon all of us to breathe in, breathe out and repeat the breathing in and out routinely for at least four times. This will help us immensely, especially if the pro-Museveni protagonists of the police and military violence against peaceful protesters can take it up!

<fieldset>
<legend align="center">More News on allAfrica.com</legend>
</fieldset>

AllAfrica – All the Time

More:
We All Need to Calm Down And Breath in And Out

Brian Bwesigye 19 May 2011 opinion By now, we all know that all is not well in Uganda!
