Tourists and foreigners intending to visit Zambia this year have every reason to believe the assurance from President Banda that the country will conduct peaceful elections this year.<\/p>\n

There are several reasons why the president spoke with such confidence and chief among these is that the country has been known to be a haven of peace and has held incident-free elections from the post-independence and multi-party politics era.<\/p>\n

There are a few in the media and some opposition leaders who would want to create an impression that the country was a no-go area this year because of the likelihood of violence as the case has been in some countries during an election year.<\/p>\n

But Zambia has a record of being peaceful and despite the fierce campaigns leading to the polling date, these do not degenerate into violence.<\/p>\n

This is not to say that the country has not experienced sporadic riots, but history does attest to how stable Zambia is.<\/p>\n

The challenge is on all Zambians who cherish peace to ensure this untainted record is not broken and that the country continues to attract visitors even in an election year.<\/p>\n
