Freetown \u2014 Development Initiative Programme (DIP), in collaboration with UNICEF, has organized a sensitization campaign against HIV and Teenage Pregnancy in Kabala, Koinadugu District on Sunday 8thMay 2011.<\/p>\n

Koinadugu District, according to latest data collected, records the high incidents of Teenage Pregnancy and HIV infection, especially among the adolescents. It is against this backdrop that the Development Initiative Programme (DIP) together with its implementing partner UNICEF embarked on a six month massive sensitization on HIV prevention and Teenage Pregnancy, the Programme Manager, Mr. Felix Kpange, disclosed.<\/p>\n

The project, he further emphasized, aims at sensitizing adolescents in and out of schools, and provides Adolescence Friendly Services for the young people in three chiefdoms out of eleven in the Koinadugu District. The strategies, he said, involved working with seven secondary schools, two vocational institutions and fourteen youth groups; also, five Adolescence Youth Friendly Centres where young men and women converge to discuss pertinent issues that affect their lives like HIV and AIDS, sexual habits and education among others, were established. The Project trained youth counselors and health workers to provide services at the centres; sixty two youths were trained as peer group educators in and out of schools and targeted teachers as Focal Persons.<\/p>\n

The Community rally in Kabala provided public awareness involving bike riders, drivers and the entire community people. Street drama and voluntary testing for HIV\/AIDS formed part of the awareness raising campaign on that day.<\/p>\n

The HIV\/AIDS Focal Person in the Koinadugu District, Staff Hawa Conteh encouraged the adolescents to come out in their numbers to do the voluntary test and frowned at all forms of stigma that go with the infection. She assured them of confidentiality.<\/p>\n

Amadu Bah, a disabled who took part in the rally, appreciated the programme but however raised concern about the six months duration of the programme which he described as not enough and hence appealed to DIP and UNICEF to extend the time to at least a year or two. Fatmata Jalloh and her friend Aminata Kamara of the Kabala Secondary School also pleaded with UNICEF and DIP for an extension of the programme so that the remaining chiefdoms will be covered. Mr. Kewulay Marrah, a Red Cross Community worker who also doubles as staff of the Red Cross Youth Empowerment Centre made a similar appeal for an extension of the programme duration so that other young men and women in the other chiefdoms in the district will benefit.<\/p>\n

According to the Admin & Finance Officer Mr. Emmanuel A. Tarawali, the objective of the day was to capture the attention and involvements of all groups cutting across age, particularly the adolescents and religion. The rally, he furthered, was based on the statistical data on the rate of teenage pregnancy and HIV infection in the district. In response to the appeals made for an extension of the project, Mr. Tarawali said the request will be discussed with DIP’s implementing partner UNICEF.<\/p>\n

Representative students from the Kabala Secondary School, Loma Secondary School, Ammadiya Muslim Secondary School and Sengbeh Junior Secondary participated. Youth Organizations that also took part were: Youth, Sport, Culture and Tourism (YSCAT), Leonard Cheshire Disability (LCD) Young Voices, Friends like Brothers, Red Cross Youth Empowerment Programme (YEP), Finnish Refugee Council FRC, So Close Family SCF, Koinadugu Blood Service, Koinadugu Academia Theatre Group (KAT) and Children Forum Network (CFN) participated.<\/p>\n
