{"id":426043,"date":"2011-05-18T10:32:26","date_gmt":"2011-05-18T10:32:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/05\/18\/nigeria-power-outage-mars-women-league\/"},"modified":"2011-05-18T10:32:26","modified_gmt":"2011-05-18T10:32:26","slug":"nigeria-power-outage-mars-women-league","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/05\/18\/nigeria-power-outage-mars-women-league\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria: Power Outage Mars Women League"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"62.8509654063\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytrust.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/dailytrust180.jpg\" alt=\"Daily Trust (Abuja)\" title=\"Visit Daily Trust (Abuja)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>David Ngobua<\/p>\n<p>18 May 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>The perennial problem of unstable electricity in the country is currently taking its toll on the ongoing 7th Zenith Bank Women Basketball League in Abuja as a couple of matches have suffered unnecessary delays and postponements.<\/p>\n<p>The indoor sports hall located at the package B of the Abuja National Stadium where the league is holding has been plunged into darkness due to the broken down standby generator, a situation which has compelled the league organizers to depend on Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, for electricity.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, even as it was the intention of the organizers to have five matches played daily, it has been hard to have the matches as scheduled because most evening matches are either played under the cover of darkness or shifted to the next day.<\/p>\n<p>Although the organizers made efforts on the first day to put in order the standby generator, it was later discovered that the quantity and cost of diesel that is required to power it is unbearable.<\/p>\n<p>To make matters worse, the generator which worked for few hours before the competition&#8217;s opening ceremony went into coma and has not been revived since then.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, even the modest opening ceremony which was presided over by the president of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Alhaji Tijani Umar was conducted under darkness outside the venue of the competition.<\/p>\n<p>The president regretted the unfortunate development but said there was nothing his federation could do to salvage the situation as he noted that the problem of electricity is a national problem which should be tackled by the appropriate authorities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is really unfortunate but there is nothing we can do about it. Electricity is a general problem and I just hope that those concerned would do something urgently to salvage the situation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is no way we would continue to run the standby generator with N100,000 diesel for just one hour. It is practically impossible&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The situation degenerated yesterday when the match involving FCT Angels and AHIP had to be stopped when there was power outage due to the heavy downpour which began in the second quarter of the match.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the darkness which enveloped the hall, it was practically impossible for the match to continue and the two teams had to wait for at least three hours for electricity to return.<\/p>\n<p>FCT Angels coach Emmanuel Odah said it was the rain that compounded the situation because participating clubs had got used to managing the faint light that usually penetrates the hall to play their matches.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;It is the rain that has made it impossible for us to continue. Like in previous matches, even when there was no light, we managed to play. But with this rain, it is too dark.
