Benoni \u2014 Tanzania’s cricket team yesterday rediscovered their winning formula in the Africa Division 2\/T20 tournament by thumping Swaziland by 45 runs in a thrilling match the Sahara Willowmoore Stadium here.The convincing victory came as a befitting relief for the Tanzania team, whose smooth run in the grueling tournament briefly became a little bumpy on Monday when Siera Leone hit them by three runs at the Sahara Willowmoore.<\/p>\n

Swaziland, one of the fast rising countries in cricket failed to withstand the pressure of the Tanzanian bowlers led by Khalil Rehemtullah, Hamisi Abdallah and Benson Mwita. Tanzania won a toss and opted to bat first, posting 143 runs with Kassim Nassor who fired 35 runs and Benson Mwita who added 25 spearheading Tanzania’s comfortable victory.<\/p>\n

“Every player was in great shape today and we hope to maintain the tempo in our next match against Ghana tomorrow (today),” said Hamisi Abdallah, the team captain. Swaziland, struggling to gain a place in cricket, lost the match after their batsmen were all dismissed after returning 98 runs in twenty allocated overs. In another match held at the same venue yesterday Nigeria defeated Rwanda by one run Tanzania has so far collected 8 points, two adrift Sierra Leone with 10 points.<\/p>\n

In their opening match, they defeated Rwanda before silencing Malawi in their second match early this week.On Monday, the Tanzania cricketers had their winning run halted when Siera Leone hit them by three runs.<\/p>\n

Their hopes to maintain fairly-tale run fizzled into thin air after they failed to make four runs in the last over to chase Sierra Leone’s 128-run score.It was the first defeat for Tanzania team in the tournament which comes to an end on Friday.<\/p>\n

Botswana, who beat Nigeria by 12 runs on Monday, now lead the nine-team championship standings. Tanzania and Nigeria are placed second and third, respectively.Sierra Leon’s victory over Tanzania came as a relief for the West Africa who had tumbled to Nigeria in the first match over the weekend.<\/p>\n

Tanzania, one the countries highly tipped to claim the top honour in this year’s tournament, could have silenced Sierra Leon had it not some errors by team wicket keeper Issa Kikasi.Kikasi gifted the Sierra Leon team the victory after he failed to utilise well two last crucial shots that could have given his team a win.<\/p>\n

Sierra Leone finished the match with eight wickets in 20 overs. After losing five wickets, the Tanzania cricketers applied all weapons at their disposal to avoid the defeat, but to no avail.On Monday morning, Tanzania notched up a one run victory over hosts Mozambique. Batsman Abhik Patwa scored a half century for the team that lost five wickets in the first ten overs.<\/p>\n

“We now have to focus on our next matches. We can finish winners or runners up if we win our remaining three matches,” said team captain Hamisi Abdallah.<\/p>\n

“Losing to Sierra Leone, whom we beat twice in the Africa Cup tournament in Dar es Salaam and Zambia last year was just a slip up, I am optimistic we’ll rediscover our winning formula in our next match against Swaziland,” he added.<\/p>\n

The Tanzania cricketers swing back in action today for a date with Ghana at the same venue. They will also face Botswana and Nigeria in their last two matches.Other matches on the menu today are: Malawi vs Rwanda, Swaziland vs Nigeria, Sierra Leone vs Botswana, Swaziland vs Malawi and Sierra Leone vs Mozambique.<\/p>\n
