{"id":425677,"date":"2011-05-17T16:46:28","date_gmt":"2011-05-17T16:46:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/05\/17\/bangladesh-africa-farm-initiative\/"},"modified":"2011-05-17T16:46:28","modified_gmt":"2011-05-17T16:46:28","slug":"bangladesh-africa-farm-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/05\/17\/bangladesh-africa-farm-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"Bangladesh Africa farm initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"67.8453359111\"><span><span>17 May 2011<\/span> <span>Last updated at<\/span> <span>12:46 ET<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>By Anbarasan Ethirajan<\/span> <span>BBC News, Dhaka<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bangladeshi companies say they have leased thousands of hectares of farmland in Africa as part of their efforts to avoid future food shortages.<\/p>\n<p>Two Bangladeshi companies have already signed deals to lease unused cultivable land in Uganda, Tanzania and Gambia.<\/p>\n<p>Another agreement to lease around 30,000 hectares for 99 years will be signed with the Tanzanian government later this week.<\/p>\n<p>Officials say African countries have huge amounts of unused cultivable land.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time they say that Bangladesh has the manpower and expertise to produce staple crops all year round.<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8216;Food security&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Under the plans, the Contract Farming System will enable Bangladeshi companies to get at least 60% of the produce.<\/p>\n<p>In return Bangladesh will train African farmers in rain-fed rice cultivation, seed conservation and irrigation.<\/p>\n<p>It is hoped that the new arrangement will increase food productivity and enable the country&#8217;s expanding workforce to be deployed in Africa&#8217;s farming sector.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Basically this idea is mainly for proper management of our food security,&#8221; said Wahidur Rahman, a senior Bangladeshi foreign ministry official.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are thinking of expanding our agriculture, but we do not have enough land to cultivate.
