Durban \u2014 Cricket South Africa has begun interviewing potential candidates for probably the most important cricket position in South Africa, the national coach.<\/p>\n

Corrie Van Zyl, Andy O’Connor, Boeta Dippenaar and selection convenor Andrew Hudson and Gerald Majola were said to make up the tough interview panel, which were busy at work in Sandton on Monday.<\/p>\n

The panel will make their recommendations to the CSA boards and a decision will be announced in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

But CSA South Africa has been tight lipped about its list of potential candidates, saying strong applications had been received from South Africa and abroad.<\/p>\n

Despite no shortlist being confirmed, it is widely speculated that the favourites for the converted position is former Indian coach Gary Kirsten and former Titans coach Richard Pybus.<\/p>\n

Other reports have indicated that former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming and former Australian all-rounder and Sri Lanka coach Tom Moody could also have faced the interview panel.<\/p>\n

The candidates in addition to extensive tests will have had to undergo psychometric testing.<\/p>\n

Proteas fans and local sports writers salivated at the thought of Kirsten coaching South Africa following his triumphant World Cup campaign with India.<\/p>\n

South African cricket then still has an issue of selecting a new captain, after Graeme Smith stepped down when the Proteas crashed out of the World Cup.<\/p>\n
