He was one of 239,000 people permitted to cast their ballot ahead of Wednesday&#8217;s poll for reasons of ill health.<\/p>\n<p>Mandela&#8217;s successor Thabo Mbeki also cast an early ballot because he will be abroad when on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Mandela, who is 92, was hospitalised in January with acute respiratory failure and he has not been seen in public since then.<\/p>\n<div readability=\"31.8318584071\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/csi\/00170970_9fb34eaa6f83dcf360e1754bf731650f\/w260x.jpg\" width=\"260\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gcis.org.za\">GCIS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Former President Nelson Mandela cast his vote in 2011 Local Government Elections from his house in Houghton.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Independent Electoral Commission chairperson Brigalia Bam, who was at Mandela&#8217;s home when he voted, said the anti-apartheid hero politely declined all help from the electoral officer.<\/p>\n<p>After voting at a polling station, Mbeki urged his compatriots to turn out and give their representatives strong mandates.<\/p>\n<p>The ANC is expected to sweep the board in the elections.<\/p>\n<p>However, the opposition Democratic Alliance expects to cash in on frustration at the ruling party&#8217;s inadequate supply of housing, water and electricy.<\/p>\n<p>Chief electoral officer Pansy Tlakula said special voting went well despite what she called minor glitches.<\/p>\n<p>This included three protest marches at stations in the north, centre and east of the country.<\/p>\n<p>People use elections to highlight their grievances, but this won&#8217;t be tolerated on Wednesday, Tlakula said.<\/p>\n<p>Results of the election are expected on Saturday.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Follow this link:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/201105170399.html\" title=\"Mandela Votes Early in Local Polls\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mandela Votes Early in Local Polls<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> South Africa&#8217;s former President Nelson Mandela has voted at his Johannesburg home in the country&#8217;s third democratic local elections.
