The West African Football Union (Wafu) has been bizarrely disbanded by Caf, stripping Ghana\u2019s Kwesi Nyantakyi as the interim boss of the regional body.<\/p>\n
The decision was taken at the Caf Executive Committee meeting in Cairo on Monday.<\/p>\n
The move orchestrated by Caf president Issa Hayatou is seen by many Wafu members as a measure to weaken Wafu which was growing in influence.<\/p>\n
Hayatou\u2019s allies Amos Adamu and Anjorin Moucharafou, who were then in charge, had tried desperately hard to stay in charge of Wafu but members booted out their administration last month.<\/p>\n
This came quickly after many of Hayatou\u2019s allies lost executive committee elections in Sudan in March, signalling that the Cameroonian could lose the next Caf elections.<\/p>\n
Anjorin, a strong Hayatou ally was throroughly thrashed by Nyantakyi at the Caf elections.<\/p>\n
A Caf statement said the move was being made \u201cconsidering the organisational issues that face Wafu\u201d and that the region would be divided into two.<\/p>\n
But the crass move to disband Wafu will rather kill regional football in West Africa rather than enhancing it.<\/p>\n
Wafu was being run by an interim committee, led by Ghana\u2019s FA President Kwesi Nyantakyi, pending Caf\u2019s review of the regional bodies.<\/p>\n
The previous president of Wafu, Amos Adamu of Nigeria, is appealing against a three-year suspension from football for allegedly seeking bribes during 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding.<\/p>\n
The Wafu Cup has just been completed in Abeokuta in Nigeria, where the hosts were beaten in the final by Togo.<\/p>\n
The region will be split into two areas \u2013 Western Zone A and Western Zone B.<\/p>\n
Zone A encompasses Cape Verde, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Senegal and Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n
Zone B features Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Niger, Nigeria and Togo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n
