ABUJA \u2013 The Legal Defence and Assistance Project, LEDAP,\u00a0 has called on the Federal Government to charge and prosecute in courts of law perpetrators of the post-election violence in Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and other states.<\/p>\n

The group also called for an increase in the compensation paid by the Federal Government to the families of each of the deceased corps members killed in the
violence from the N5mllion paid to not less than N200 million.<\/p>\n

National Coordinator of LEDAP, Mr Chino Obiagwu, in a statement, warned that \u201cthe appointment of judicial panel of inquiry is not sufficient to address the need to bring the perpetrators to book. The panel of inquiry is not a judicial body to undertake prosecution of the perpetrators.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to him, \u201cwe are concerned that the setting up of the panel of inquiry will only sweep the prosecution of the perpetrators of the killings under the carpet, in the same way the killings of innocent people in Jos crises since 2004 were swept under the carpet through such commissions of inquiry.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this country, none of the commissions of inquiry has produced any solution to the problem of impunity in respect of civil crises resulting in killings of citizens.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is important that the Ministry of Justice and\u00a0 police, forthwith, arrest and charge to court all the politicians that incited the violence that followed the April 2011 presidential election.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
