Dar es Salaam \u2014 Athletics Tanzania says it will use this year’s East and Central Africa championship set for June 3-4 at the National Stadium to select players who will form the national team for the All Africa Games.<\/p>\n

AT secretary general SuleimanNyambui said yesterday that athletes who would excel during the two-day championship will constitute the bulk of Endrow Baro’s squad for the games set for September in Maputo, Mozambique.<\/p>\n

“Coach Baro will use the East and Central Africa championship to select his final squad for the Maputo Games,” he said.<\/p>\n

But he fell short of revealing the number of athletes who would make the trip to Mozambique for the biannual games.<\/p>\n

The AT official named the countries expected to compete the regional championship as Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Dijibout, Ertirea, Ethiopia, Zambia, Rwanda, Burundi and Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n

He said 40 athletes named recently to form the provisional squad for All Africa Games would also compete in next month’s championship.<\/p>\n

He also admitted that AT was racing against time to raise Sh100 million for the East and Central Africa championship.<\/p>\n

“We need at least Sh100 million to foot accommodation, food and internal transport costs for participating teams,” he said, adding:<\/p>\n

“We’ve approached various institutions and individuals, but none of them has so far responded positively.”<\/p>\n
