OWERRI \u2013 Retired police officers from the South-East and South-South geo-political zones of the country have appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to look into the lingering issue of non-payment of pensions to those who were not yet 10 years in service when the war ended in 1970.<\/p>\n

The appeal was contained in a letter captioned, Non-payment of Pension to Some War-affected Police Officers, signed by Godspower Ejiofor, Celestine Anyaeri, Cosmas Onuoha, Patrick Ucheoma and Benson Ohabuiro.<\/p>\n

\u201cSir, we are mere victims of circumstances. During the grant of amnesty to the affected persons, no further condition was attached as to warrant any discrimination against some people,\u201d aggrieved ex-police officers pleaded with the President.<\/p>\n

According to them, \u201cthis discrimination is unfair and an injustice to old and weak people.
\u201cWe did not voluntarily retire from service, neither did we refuse to be re-absorbed into the Nigeria Police Force at the end of the civil war.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ex-servicemen equally pleaded with the President that they be allowed to enjoy pension with their colleagues who were favoured in the amnesty proclamation.<\/p>\n

Vanguard recalls that former President Olusegun Obasanjo granted and announced amnesty for\u00a0 war-affected police officers from the South-East and South-South zones on May 29, 2000.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
