The Get Atta Mills Endorsed (GAME) Campaign Team may suffer a major setback if the Supreme Court rules in favour of an advocacy Non-Governmental Organisation called Centre for Constitutional Order.<\/p>\n
The Centre is seeking an injunction to bar the chairman of the campaign, J H Owusu Acheampong from holding himself out as such because he is also serving as a member of constitutionally mandated body.<\/p>\n
The President of the Centre, Dennis Owusu Ofosu, told Citi News the action has become necessary following the naming of Mr. J H Owusu Acheampong, member of the Council of State representing the Brong Ahafo Region, as the chairman of GAME.<\/p>\n
According to him, Mr Owusu Acheampong’s purported new role flies in the face of the 1992 Constitution and the Centre will therefore file a writ on Monday May 16 at the Supreme Court to seek interpretation on whether a sitting member of the Council of State can engage in active partisan politics by holding a political position.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe gravamen of the writ borders on the constitutionality of a sitting member of the council of state playing partisan politics. We believe that by the tenor of chapter 9 of the 1992 Constitution, a member of the council of state cannot actively play partisan politics and that is the interpretation we\u2019re seeking from the supreme court\u201d.<\/p>\n
The Centre believes the campaign chairman\u2019s position is further complicated because he represents the people of Brong Ahafo Region, whose political preferences are diverse. \u201cHe was elected to represent a region and on the basis of that whether or not his political colouration is already known, he still cannot play partisan politics, once he remains a member of the council of state. That would mean that he is stepping on the sensitivity of the people of Brong Ahafo region who are likely to come from different political parties\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
