The Israeli’s disastrous time has seen him stay in the relegation zone for 67 of the previous 71 weeks. Even his tenure as caretaker manager at Chelsea saw the big-spending Blues flop in the race for domestic and European success to Manchester United in 2007\/08.<\/p>\n
The game was a special lowlight in a remarkable bloopers reel attained during his spell in England. From 2-0 ahead and coasting at half-time, to 3-2 down and relegated at the death, Grant’s inadequacies were on full display.<\/p>\n
Murmurs of discontent were created by a teamsheet for the do or die clash that seemed to have been picked at random. The decision to hand youngster Jordan Spence his first ever start at the expense of solid right-back Lars Jacobsen elicited derision even before a ball was kicked.<\/p>\n
While West Ham had previously surrendered the same advantage to champions Manchester United, this time, it was the division’s joint-lowest scorers who inflicted the final blow. Wayne Rooney pulled Grant’s defence apart in April, but no plausible excuse can be made to explain the game-changing impact of Wigan’s Conor Sammon, a \u00a3600,000 January signing who had previously netted 17 goals in 65 Kilmarnock appearances.<\/p>\n
The bargain basement Irishman left centre-backs Danny Gabbidon and James Tomkins in bits. With no help from the sideline as the Israeli stood motionless with his arms across his chest, the second rate defenders stood no chance of receiving any encouragement or organisation in their hour of need.<\/p>\n
In farcical scenes that replicated the disorder on the pitch, a plane buzzed overhead with a sign that read ‘AVRAM GRANT – MILLWALL LEGEND.’ The message from the banner said enough about the low esteem that Grant is held in within British football.<\/p>\n
This must now spread to its boardrooms. While West Ham’s slide accelerated under Gianfranco Zola’s stewardship last term, Grant did not inherit a squad of no-hopers.<\/p>\n

Of his summer signings, only Frederic Piquionne looked anything like value as Pablo Barrera and Winston Reid failed to bring their World Cup 2010 form with them and Victor Obinna ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous. The arrival of January loan signing Demba Ba seemed inspired at times, but expensive has-beens Wayne Bridge and Robbie Keane never came close to justifying their enormous wages.<\/p>\n
A glance at the West Ham roster shows a list of players more than the equal of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers, West Bromwich Albion, Bolton Wanderers and even eighth-placed Fulham.<\/p>\n
As Grant faced the press pack for the final time minutes before his departure was announced, he presented himself in his usual monotone, uninspired manner. His deathly delivery made rumours of Parker providing the inspiration during half-time team talks seem all the more believable.<\/p>\n
West Ham co-owners David Gold and Sullivan will now regret their decision to fail to pull the plug in the New Year. Their fellow chairmen must not bow to powerful voices in the game that champion Grant’s cause.<\/p>\n
Grant’s acolyte, agent Pini Zahivi, has seen his client placed at Chelsea and rumoured with an upstairs role at Stamford Bridge.<\/p>\n
In truth, Grant has stained the Premier League with his appearance for too long. Not even a desk job would keep him far enough away from the chaos he has created on the pitch.<\/p>\n
