AWKA \u2013 THE Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria has shut down ten X-ray centres in Onitsha and Awka, warning that it will prosecute those who practise the profession without the requisite qualifications.<\/p>\n

Registrar of the board, Mr. Reuben Babatunde, on a monitoring exercise in Onitsha and Awka, said the offences for which the centres were closed ranged from unauthorised premises, using unqualified radiographers to operate X-ray machines, non-registration with the regulatory body, non led-lining of X-ray rooms and operating under unsafe and bad sanitary conditions, among other offences.<\/p>\n

While some of the centres closed were operating under some hospitals, others were operating as X-ray and diagnostic centres only.<\/p>\n

Babatunde, who spoke through the board\u2019s Head of Monitoring, Mr. Ebere Onwuegbuchu, said it had become very imperative for the regulatory body to chase out quacks from practising radiography, as they posed danger to public health.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cIn all the centres and hospitals we visited, we discovered that they were not registered. There were no qualified personnel to administer ironising radiation; poor standard was visible in all; patients were exposed to ironising radiation as none of the X-ray rooms were led-lined.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
