\"\"<\/a>Dolly Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) operating in the Central Region, has appealed to the Government to consider gender equality as critical towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).<\/p>\n

Ms Rosina Akourkor Teye, Executive Director of Dolly Foundation, said women had the right to participate equally in management and decision making.<\/p>\n

Ms Teye made the appeal at a reception her organization organized for about 350 mothers in Assin Foso and its surrounding communities as part of activities to commemorate Mothers Day celebration in the area.<\/p>\n

Fifteen of them, above age 70, were given student mattresses in appreciation of their contributions towards the growth and development of children and the society.<\/p>\n

She said women must be encouraged to share their opinions and views and expressed the hope that they would continue to fight for that freedom.<\/p>\n

Ms Teye called for women empowerment and equality adding that all obstacles that undermined women growth and welfare be removed for them to continue to play active roles in decision making in the country.<\/p>\n

She urged mothers, who are the bedrock of the family, to ensure that they counselled their children to refrain from immoral acts such as taking of drugs and watching pornographic films.<\/p>\n

Ms Teye appealed to children to respect the elderly, avoid indecent dressing and copying of bad habits from their peers.<\/p>\n

She also appealed to men not to leave the home expenditure on women alone and expressed concern about the situation where most women had become single parents due to failure of some men to take care of their children.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis practice is against human rights and gender equality policies and it must stop,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Nana Appiantua IV, Nifahemaa of Assin Traditional Area, who chaired the programme, commended the NGO for organizing the programme and expressed the hope that other NGOs would emulate the example.<\/p>\n

She called on men who were in the habit of beating their wives to stop saying it was against the right of women and did not augur well for the institution of marriage.<\/p>\n
