Arusha \u2014 A serious food shortage is looming in Arusha Region due to insufficient rains this season.<\/p>\n

Much of the trouble will be in the semi arid districts of Longido, Monduli and Ngorongoro as well as parts of Karatu.<\/p>\n

A survey by this newspaper last week indicated that scores of families will have to be supported with relief food supplies.An official of the Ololosokwan Village in Ngorongoro District, Mr Lazaro Ndirango, said the situation was critical because the long-rains period was over.”We did not have sufficient rains in March and April this year,” he told The Citizen on Sunday in an interview.<\/p>\n

The village executive officer said the government has already been notified of the worrying situation.<\/p>\n

However, he insisted that the livestock keepers would have to sell some of their animals in order to purchase food as there are little prospects for food handouts. Mr Ndirango said this would not be the first time for Ngorongoro to be affected by poor rains and subsequent food shortages.<\/p>\n

The situation was critical in 2008 and 2009 during which thousands of cattle perished in Ololosokwan and other villages bordering the Serengeti National Park.He warned that the local community could also lose its herds and urged residents of the area to sell their livestock early while they are still healthy to be able to fetch enough money to buy food.<\/p>\n

At the height of the crisis two years ago, the price of one head of cattle dropped to as low as Sh10,000 from between Sh200,000 and 300,000.Mr Yohana Shinyeu, the village chairman, echoed the fears expressed elsewhere, saying livestock keepers would be adversely affected.<\/p>\n
